Chapter 9 - The Truth About Michael Caruso

By seven o'clock that evening, a dense, freezing fog rolled in off the East River, blanketing the Brooklyn Navy Yard in a ghostly white shroud. Pier 42—the very warehouse where Michael Caruso had been assassinated three years earlier—stood dark and imposing against the industrial skyline.

Inside the massive concrete structure, the air smelled of salt water, diesel fuel, and rusted iron.

Five elderly men in tailored dark overcoats sat behind a long wooden table in the center of the warehouse, illuminated by overhead floodlights. These were the heads of the Five Families—the shadow rulers of the city's ports, unions, and financial corridors. Don Antonio, a man with white hair and eyes like polished obsidian, sat at the center.

Roman stood ten feet to the left of the table, dressed in a long black wool coat, flanked by Matteo and twenty heavily armed Caruso soldiers standing silent as statues in the shadows.

I sat in an iron chair next to Roman, my posture straight, my head unbowed. The ledger rested on the table in front of Don Antonio.

"The handwriting and the digital timestamps have been verified by our forensic specialists," Don Antonio announced, his gravelly voice echoing through the vast empty warehouse. "The Canadian bank transfers match the shell accounts operated by Grant Mercer. Arthur Mercer had no knowledge of the plot. Michael Caruso was betrayed by a coward seeking to steal a throne."

Don Antonio closed the black book and looked at Roman.

"By the unanimous decree of the Commission, the Mercer family's seat is permanently revoked. All assets, shipping terminals, real estate, and union charters are hereby transferred to Evelyn Caruso and her husband, Roman Caruso."

A collective murmur of assent passed through the council lords.

"And Grant Mercer?" Roman asked, his voice cutting through the cold air like a razor.

"Grant Mercer is declared an outlaw," Don Antonio declared formally. "He has no protection under our laws. His life is forfeit. You may dispose of him as you see fit."

Right on cue, the heavy iron warehouse doors rattled as three black SUVs screeched to a halt outside.

Grant Mercer, flanked by eight heavily armed private security guards wearing tactical vests, stormed through the pedestrian entrance. Grant had an automatic pistol in his hand, his eyes wild with manic desperation, his clothes disheveled.

"Evelyn!" Grant shouted, his voice echoing frantically off the corrugated steel walls. "Where is the damn book?! Give me the ledger, or I swear to God I'll put a bullet in your head right here!"

Grant had walked straight into the center of the warehouse before the floodlights fully illuminated the scene.

He froze.

His eyes widened in sheer, unadulterated terror as he recognized the Five Family bosses sitting behind the tribunal table, followed by the sight of Roman Caruso stepping out of the shadows with a look of cold, merciless triumph.

"You're late, Grant," Roman said smoothly. "We've already concluded our meeting."
