Chapter 3 - The Cage of Silk and Steel

The morning sun broke through the frosted glass of the Caruso estate, casting long, sharp beams of golden light across the opulent master bedroom. When I opened my eyes, the other side of the king-sized bed was empty, the sheets cold, but a folded black silk robe lay resting at the foot of the mattress alongside a tray of fresh fruit, warm croissants, and steaming black coffee.

For the first time in ten years, I woke up without the terror of heavy footsteps approaching my bedroom door.

I sat up slowly, testing my ribs. The sharp, blinding agony from yesterday had subsided into a dull, manageable ache, thanks to Dr. Vance’s expert bandaging and the medication. As I pulled on the silk robe, I noticed a silver key resting on the breakfast tray beneath a handwritten note in Roman’s bold, angular script:

Every door in this house is open to you. The estate is surrounded by twenty-four armed guards loyal only to me. You are safe. Eat, rest, and do not leave the grounds.

— R.

I stared at the note, tracing the ink with my fingertips. In the Mercer household, every door had a lock on the outside. My father and Grant had treated me like a dangerous secret to be kept locked away in a gilded cage. To be handed a key—to be told I had free rein over an empire’s stronghold—felt disorienting, almost terrifying.

After eating lightly, I slipped into a pair of soft cashmere trousers and an oversized knit sweater that concealed the bandages on my torso. I unlocked the bedroom door and stepped into the sprawling hallway.

The Caruso estate was a masterclass in fortified luxury. High ceilings, classical oil paintings, and dark mahogany woodwork gave it the appearance of an old-world European manor, but the subtle presence of biometric scanners on the walls and earpiece-wearing security personnel betrayed its true function: a fortress.

As I descended the grand marble staircase, Matteo appeared at the bottom, dressed in a sharp charcoal suit with a concealed holster beneath his left arm.

"Good morning, Mrs. Caruso," Matteo said, bowing his head with genuine deference. "Mr. Caruso is currently in his study with the harbor captains, but he instructed me to assist you with anything you might require."

Hearing myself addressed as Mrs. Caruso sent an odd ripple through my chest.

"Please, just Evelyn," I said. "Is there a library?"

"Right this way, ma'am."

Matteo led me through a sunlit corridor to a two-story library lined with thousands of leather-bound books, floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the frozen Atlantic bay, and a roaring stone fireplace.

"I will be right outside the doors if you need anything," Matteo said before stepping back and closing the double doors.

I walked over to the window, watching the waves crash violently against the rocky cliffs below. Cold Harbor was isolated, rugged, and entirely owned by the Caruso syndicate. No one could approach by land or sea without triggering Roman’s defense grid.

"Enjoying the view?"

I spun around to find Roman standing near the inner study entrance. He had rolled up the sleeves of his crisp white dress shirt, revealing muscular forearms corded with veins and a dark, intricate tattoo of an eagle clutching a dagger on his right wrist. He looked powerful, dangerous, and completely in command.

"It's breathtaking," I said honestly. "And quiet. I'm not used to quiet."

Roman walked over, stopping just a foot away from me. His dark eyes conducted a swift, thorough inspection of my face, checking for signs of pain or distress. "Did Vance's medication help?"

"A great deal. Thank you."

Roman nodded, satisfied. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a sleek, encrypted smartphone, handing it to me. "This is a private line. It cannot be tapped or tracked. Grant has already called my public office three times this morning, asking if we 'enjoyed our wedding night.'"

A cold knot formed in my stomach. "What did you tell him?"

"I told him you were resting, and that I was thoroughly pleased with my acquisition," Roman replied, a wicked, razor-sharp smirk tugging at the corner of his lips. "I want him confident. I want him arrogant. I want him to believe his plan worked, that he traded his sister for my silence and that I am treating you like a trophy."

"And what happens when he discovers you know the truth?" I asked.

Roman took another step closer, closing the distance between us until I could feel the heat radiating from his chest. He reached up, tucking a loose strand of hair behind my ear, his touch surprisingly tender for a man who commanded an army of killers.

"By the time Grant realizes what I'm doing," Roman murmured, "he won't have an empire left to save him. Today, I began shorting Mercer Global’s shipping stocks through three shell corporations in Zurich. By Friday, his primary creditor will call in a fifty-million-dollar loan he cannot pay."

I looked up into Roman's dark eyes, seeing the brilliant, terrifying strategist at work. "Grant will panic. When Grant panics, he gets violent and reckless."

"Let him," Roman said coldly. "A reckless enemy makes mistakes. And every mistake he makes will bring him one step closer to the cell I am building for him."

Suddenly, the encrypted phone in my hand buzzed with an incoming text message. I looked down at the unknown number on the screen.

Evelyn. I know you're alive. If you want to survive the month, do exactly as I say. Meet me behind the St. Regis tonight at midnight, or I release the photos of what Father did to you to every news outlet in North America.

— Grant.

My hands began to tremble. Grant was trying to blackmail me into betraying Roman from the inside.

May you like

Roman noticed my sudden stillness. He reached down and gently slid the phone from my fingers. As his eyes read the message, the warmth in his face vanished, replaced by an expression of pure, predatory malice.

"He wants a meeting," Roman whispered, looking up from the screen with eyes like liquid fire. "Let's give my dear brother-in-law exactly what he asked for."
