Chapter 15 - A Legacy Built on Love, Not Blood

Two years later.
The ocean breeze was sweet and warm as the late afternoon sun painted the sky in brilliant hues of violet, tangerine, and gold over Cold Harbor.
I stood on the expansive wrap-around veranda of our Long Island home, leaning against the polished wooden railing. In my hands, I held the annual report for the Caruso-Mercer Hope Foundation. Over the past twenty-four months, our centers had provided safe shelter, legal freedom, and medical care to over five thousand women and children across the eastern seaboard.
The shipping empire had never been more prosperous, operating with complete transparency, fair union wages, and unbreakable security under Roman's visionary leadership.
"Mama!"
A sweet, joyful voice called out from the manicured lawn below.
I looked down to see our sixteen-month-old son, Michael, his dark curls bouncing as he toddled across the soft green grass, chasing a golden retriever puppy. Michael had his father’s dark, intelligent eyes and a smile that could melt the hardest heart.
Behind him walked Roman, dressed in a casual linen shirt with the sleeves rolled up, watching our son with a look of pure, unadulterated adoration.
Roman looked up, saw me standing on the veranda, and his face broke into that rare, breathtaking smile reserved solely for me. He scooped little Michael up into his strong arms, placing the giggling boy onto his broad shoulders, and walked up the veranda steps.
"Look who decided he didn't want to take his afternoon nap," Roman said, stepping beside me and wrapping his free arm around my waist, pulling me into his side.
Michael reached down with his chubby little hands, patting my cheek. "Mama! Doggy run fast!"
I laughed, kissing Michael’s soft forehead before turning my face up to kiss my husband’s lips. "Just like his father. Always running toward adventure."
Roman looked at me, his thumb gently caressing the side of my neck, his dark eyes filled with a peace that had once seemed impossible for a man born into war.
"Are you happy, Evelyn?" Roman asked softly, asking the question he still whispered to me every single evening.
I leaned my head against his strong shoulder, watching the golden sun dip below the calm, endless horizon of the Atlantic Ocean, feeling our son’s joyful laughter vibrate between us.
The scars on my back were still there—faint silver memories of a past that could never touch me again. But they were no longer a prison. They were the foundation of an empire built on courage, redemption, and an unshakeable love that had conquered the darkest shadows.

"I have everything I ever dreamed of, Roman," I whispered, holding my family tight as the stars began to twinkle in the twilight sky. "I am finally home."
