Chapter 12 - Fire and Retribution

Two weeks had passed since the night at Terminal 9.

The news across North America was dominated by a single, earth-shattering headline: MERCER EMPIRE COLLAPSES: HEIR ARRESTED FOR HISTORIC HARBOR CONSPIRACY AS SISTER TAKES FULL EXECUTIVE CONTROL.

Federal marshals had raided Mercer Global’s headquarters, arresting forty-two corrupt executives, shipping captains, and crooked politicians who had assisted Grant in his treason. The Canadian syndicate leaders who had supplied the explosives for Michael's murder were intercepted at the border by federal task forces acting on Roman's intelligence, dismantling their network permanently.

Inside the Long Island estate, the atmosphere was transformed.

The tension, the paranoia, and the shadow of impending war that had hung over the Caruso manor had completely vanished, replaced by a profound, peaceful stillness.

I sat in the sunlit breakfast nook overlooking the snow-covered gardens, sipping hot tea while reading the morning financial papers.

"Evelyn," Dr. Vance’s warm voice interrupted my thoughts.

The elderly doctor walked in with his medical kit, smiling warmly. "Time for your final examination."

I stood up, untying the soft robe to let Dr. Vance inspect my back and ribs. He carefully removed the last remaining medical tape, examining the healed tissue beneath.

"Remarkable," Dr. Vance said, adjusting his glasses. "The fractures in your ribs have completely calcified and healed. The lacerations have closed cleanly, and the burn tissue is fading into soft silver scars. With the regenerative therapy we're continuing, you will experience no long-term pain."

"Thank you, Arthur," I said, feeling an overwhelming wave of gratitude. "For everything."

"You don't need to thank me, my dear," Dr. Vance said, packing his instruments away. "In forty years of serving the Caruso family, I have never seen Roman smile until you walked into this house. You healed him just as much as I healed you."

After Dr. Vance departed, the heavy oak doors opened, and Roman walked into the room. He had discarded his formal business attire for a comfortable dark sweater and slacks, looking relaxed, powerful, and utterly content.

He walked straight toward me, wrapped his arms around my waist, and pulled me gently against his chest, burying his face in my hair.

"Vance says you're fully healed," Roman murmured, his voice rich with affection.

"I am," I replied, resting my hands against his broad chest. "In more ways than one."

Roman reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet jeweler's box. He opened it, revealing a stunning platinum ring set with an exquisite, flawless emerald surrounded by a halo of brilliant diamonds.

"This is not a peace treaty ring," Roman whispered, looking deeply into my eyes. "This is not a contract between two warring families. This is a promise from a man who loves you with everything he has."

Tears of pure happiness welled in my eyes. "Roman..."

May you like

"Evelyn Mercer," he said softly, taking my left hand and slipping the emerald onto my finger. "Will you do me the honor of truly becoming my wife?"

"Yes," I breathed, throwing my arms around his neck. "A thousand times, yes."
