Chapter 10 - The Desperate Father's Begging: Preston On His Knees In Central Park

Two weeks after the board vote, I took Conrad for an afternoon stroll through the private, gated conservatory gardens of Central Park, accompanied by two executive security guards walking at a discreet distance.
The summer flowers were in full bloom, and Conrad was laughing merrily as he reached for the colorful butterflies fluttering above the lavender bushes.
Suddenly, a man stumbled out from behind a line of oak trees.
It was Preston.
He had lost twenty pounds. His clothes were rumpled, his hair unkempt, and his face was gaunt with desperation. He had violated his restraining order, sneaking past the park perimeter just to catch a glimpse of us.
The security guards immediately moved forward, hands reaching inside their jackets, but I raised my hand to stop them.
“Evelyn! Please!” Preston fell to his knees on the stone path, five feet away, tears streaming down his hollow cheeks. “Just give me five minutes! Look at me! I have lost everything! The feds took the cars, they seized my bank accounts, and my lawyers say I’m facing three years in minimum security! I don't care about the money anymore! Just let me hold my son! Let me be his father!”
I looked down at the man who had traded his family’s honor for cheap vanity and stolen riches.
“A father protects his family, Preston,” I said, my voice steady, clear, and devoid of hatred. “A father doesn't steal from dying children to buy jewelry for a mistress. A father doesn't abandon his pregnant wife when she needs him most.”
Conrad reached up, his tiny hand resting against my cheek, babbling happily.
“You chose this path with every lie you told, Preston,” I continued softly. “You will serve your time, pay your debts to society, and learn what it means to live with the consequences of your actions. But Conrad will grow up knowing what real integrity looks like.”

I turned the stroller around and walked down the sunlit path.
Behind me, Preston’s desperate weeping faded into the rustle of the summer breeze.
