Chapter 9 - The Neighbor’s Security Footage

While Brandon sat in a holding cell at the Franklin County Jail, Detective Ramirez and I sat in our living room with our next-door neighbor, Mrs. Martha Gable.

Martha was a seventy-year-old retired schoolteacher who lived alone with her golden retriever. She had brought over a thermos of chamomile tea and a thumb drive containing four hundred hours of high-definition footage from her Ring floodlight camera, which pointed directly at our front porch and driveway.

Ramirez plugged the drive into his laptop.

We watched the footage from Tuesday morning, May 26th.

At 5:45 AM, Brandon was seen loading three suitcases into the back of the minivan.

Then the camera captured eight-year-old Liam standing in the doorway in his pajamas, holding his small blue suitcase, crying silently.

On the high-definition audio, Brandon’s voice was crystal clear:

“Get back inside the house, Liam. You’re eight years old. Stop acting like a baby. If you step off that porch, I’ll call the boarding school in Pennsylvania and have you sent away before your mother gets back.”

Brandon then grabbed Liam’s small suitcase, threw it directly into the trash bin at the curb, pulled the front door shut, turned the deadbolt from the outside, and drove away with Lucas and Alyssa.

Over the next five days, the camera documented Liam’s desperate fight for survival.

On day three, Liam was seen sitting on the front porch step for two hours in the rain, looking down the empty street, waiting for a car that never came.

On day five, when the summer thunderstorm knocked out the neighborhood transformer, Liam was seen stepping outside into the darkness at 4:00 PM, holding a piece of paper with the address of the local Kroger supermarket written in crayon, walking down the sidewalk alone in oversized sneakers.

Tears streamed silently down Mrs. Gable’s face.

“I had no idea, Evelyn,” Martha wept, clutching my hand. “Brandon told me on Monday that the whole family was going to California together. If I had known that poor angel was inside that house alone, I would have broken the window with a brick.”

“You didn't know, Martha,” I said gently, wiping my own tears. “Brandon made sure nobody knew.”
