LEFT IN THE DARK: My Husband Took His Kids To San Diego And Left My 8-Year-Old Son Alone For Six Days While I Buried My Mother—When He Returned With Souvenirs, The Police Were Waiting In Our Living Room

Sitting on the island counter was our family printer.

Resting in the output tray was a printed itinerary from Southwest Airlines dated May 25th—the exact morning after my mother had passed away.

The original reservation listed five passengers:

Brandon Miller

Lucas Miller

Alyssa Miller

Evelyn Vance-Miller

Liam Vance

Directly beneath it was a second document: a customer service modification receipt.

At 2:14 PM on May 25th, Brandon had contacted Southwest Airlines. He had officially canceled my seat due to my bereavement travel, which was expected.

But beneath my name was a second cancellation.

PASSENGER CANCELLED: LIAM VANCE (AGE 8).

REFUND ISSUED: $482.00 (CREDITED TO BRANDON MILLER PERSONAL CHECKING).

Brandon hadn't forgotten Liam. He hadn't been forced to leave Liam behind due to an unexpected last-minute emergency.

He had intentionally, methodically canceled an eight-year-old child’s ticket forty-eight hours before departing, pocketed the cash refund into his private account, and left the boy behind in an empty house.

I pulled open the under-sink trash can.

Lying on top of empty coffee grounds was Liam’s small blue rolling suitcase—the one he had packed two weeks earlier with his swim trunks, his snorkel mask, and a pair of water shoes.

Brandon had thrown my son’s packed suitcase straight into the garbage before walking out the front door.

“He threw it away,” I whispered, staring into the trash can, my voice hollow with disbelief. “Liam spent three weeks packing this bag. He kept his favorite comic books inside it so he could read them on the plane.”

Detective Ramirez stood behind me, taking continuous high-resolution photographs with his departmental camera.

“Mrs. Miller, look at the refrigerator,” Ramirez pointed.

I turned around.
