Chapter 7 - The Note Lucas Found Behind the Magnet

Brandon didn't even blink. He gave an exasperated sigh, running a hand through his styled hair as if I were being dramatic over a forgotten gallon of milk.
“He’s upstairs, obviously,” Brandon said smoothly. “He had a mild fever this morning so I told him to rest in bed while I ran the kids to get some lunch.”
“Dad?” eleven-year-old Lucas spoke up from the doorway, looking around the cold, dark room with a puzzled frown. “What are you talking about? Liam didn't come to lunch with us. Liam didn't come to California at all. You said—”
“Lucas, go out to the minivan!” Brandon barked, his voice suddenly sharp and commanding.
“No, Lucas,” Detective Ramirez said with absolute authority, stepping between Brandon and his children. “Lucas and Alyssa, stay right where you are.”
Lucas looked at me, then at the police officers, and then his eyes drifted to the kitchen counter.
Lucas walked past his father into the kitchen. He saw the open trash can where Liam’s blue rolling suitcase was still visible among the coffee grounds.
Then Lucas looked at the refrigerator door.
Although the original handwritten note had been placed into evidence, Detective Ramirez had left a high-resolution photocopy taped beneath the Ohio State magnet for this exact confrontation.
Lucas pulled the paper from the fridge and read his father’s handwriting out loud:
“1. DO NOT open the front door for anyone... 3. There are hot dogs in the drawer... 4. Send your mother the exact text messages I scheduled on your tablet... 5. If you call your mother and upset her, you will ruin our family...”
Lucas’s face turned an ashen white. He lowered the paper, his hands trembling, and looked at his father with pure, unadulterated disgust.
“You told us Liam went to Milwaukee with Evelyn,” Lucas whispered, his voice cracking with tears. “You told Alyssa and me that Liam wanted to be with his grandma’s family!”
Nine-year-old Alyssa dropped her bag of seashells onto the floor, the shells shattering across the hardwood.
“Dad... you left Liam here by himself?” Alyssa began to cry. “You locked him in the house for a whole week?!”
Brandon’s polished facade completely fractured.
“Lucas, give me that paper right now!” Brandon yelled, lunging toward his son.
Before Brandon could take two steps, Detective Ramirez grabbed him by the shoulder, spun him around against the wall, and slammed his arms behind his back.
