Chapter 5 - The Beach Photos and the Fake Messages

Before joining the detectives, I sped to Nationwide Children’s Hospital.
I ran down the third-floor pediatric ward until I reached Room 314.
Sitting on the hospital bed, holding a warm cup of hot chocolate and wrapped in three heated blankets, was Liam. A nurse was gently checking his blood pressure, and a child psychologist was sitting in a nearby armchair with a sketchpad.
The moment Liam saw me in the doorway, his eyes widened. He dropped his cup onto the tray table and threw himself into my arms.
“Mom!” he sobbed, burying his little face into my neck. “Mom, I’m so sorry! I’m so sorry I couldn't stay in the house!”
I collapsed onto the bed, wrapping my arms around his small, shivering frame, kissing his hair, his cheeks, his wet eyes.
“Shh... baby, look at me,” I wept, pulling his face back so he could see my eyes. “You did nothing wrong. Do you hear me? You did absolutely nothing wrong. You are the bravest boy in the world.”
“Brandon said... Brandon said you would be mad at me,” Liam hiccuped, clutching my sweater.
“Brandon is a monster, Liam. He lied to you. He lied to me. He lied to everyone. You saved yourself by walking to that store, and I am so proud of you.”
I spent the next three hours holding him, feeding him warm soup, and watching his color slowly return.
At 1:15 PM, my phone chimed on the nightstand.
It was a notification from Instagram.
Brandon had just posted a public photo album with the caption: “Unforgettable family memories in Coronado! Blessed beyond measure with these amazing kids.”
The first picture showed Brandon, Lucas, and Alyssa standing on the golden sands of Coronado Beach with surfboards under their arms, grinning ear to ear under the California sunshine.
The second photo showed them eating sixty-dollar steaks at an upscale seafood grill.
And on Brandon’s left wrist was a brand-new, six-hundred-dollar Apple Watch Ultra.
He had bought his luxury tech gadget with the four-hundred-and-eighty-two-dollar refund he stole by canceling my son’s airline ticket.

I screenshotted every single image, backed up the entire metadata to a secure cloud drive, and handed the digital folder straight to the Assistant County Prosecutor who had arrived at the hospital.
“Mrs. Miller,” the prosecutor said, reviewing the timestamps. “The judge has just signed an emergency ex-parte temporary restraining order, an emergency custody revocation, and a felony arrest warrant for Brandon Miller. Let’s go meet your husband.”
