Chapter 6 - The Ball At The Drake Hotel And The Cleaner In A Designer Gown

The following six days were an intense trial of willpower, discipline, and unexpected closeness.

Every morning at 6:00 AM, I woke Lucas for his medication, monitored his vitals through graded treadmill walks, and prepared meals carefully designed to flush the remaining toxins from his liver while rebuilding his electrolyte reserves. Between medical checks, I watched him command his empire from a laptop.

I saw a side of Lucas Bennett that the business tabloids never wrote about.

I saw him quietly authorize millions of dollars to fund free community clinics on the South Side of Chicago. I saw him refuse to lay off factory workers in Ohio despite Julian’s insistence on cutting operational costs. Beneath the icy exterior of the corporate titan was a man carrying the weight of thousands of families on his shoulders—a man who had built a fortress around his heart because everyone he had ever loved had tried to exploit him.

By Thursday night, the physical transformation was undeniable. His heart rhythm was stable, his lungs were clear, and his strength had returned.

But Friday brought a completely different kind of panic.

At 3:00 PM on the day of the Drake Gala, the penthouse doors opened, and a team of high-end stylists entered, pushing rolling racks of designer evening gowns, diamond jewelry cases, and makeup kits.

“What is all this?” I asked, backing away toward the kitchen.

Lucas walked out of his dressing room, looking devastatingly handsome in a bespoke black tuxedo with a crisp silk bow tie.

“You’re coming with me tonight,” Lucas said simply.

“Lucas, no,” I protested, my cheeks burning. “I'm your medical attendant. I can wear a modest black blazer and stand near the security detail in the back.”

“If you stand near the security detail, Julian and the board will know I'm hiding a medical condition,” Lucas said, stepping closer until he was standing just inches in front of me. “The only way to disarm my enemies tonight is to project total strength. You enter with me on my arm. As my personal guest.”

“People will ask questions. Your world doesn't accept people like me.”

Lucas reached out, his thumb gently brushing a stray lock of hair behind my ear. The touch sent an electric shiver straight down my spine.

“My world will respect whoever I tell them to respect,” Lucas said softly, his deep voice vibrating with quiet authority. “Besides... you belong in the light, Bailey. Not hiding in the shadows.”

Two hours later, I stood in front of the full-length mirror in the master suite, barely recognizing the woman looking back at me.

The stylists had dressed me in an emerald-green silk-chiffon gown with an off-the-shoulder neckline that draped elegantly over my collarbones and flowed down to the floor. My chestnut hair was pinned up in an intricate, romantic chignon, leaving delicate strands framing my face. A discreet, matching satin clutch hung from my wrist—containing a compact emergency epi-pen, nitroglycerin spray, and a pocket-sized pulse reader.

When I stepped into the foyer, Lucas was waiting.

He stopped mid-sentence while speaking to Marcus. His eyes traveled from my face down the length of the emerald gown and back up again. For the first time since I had met him, the indomitable Lucas Bennett was completely speechless.

“You look... magnificent,” Lucas breathed, extending his arm toward me.

“Let’s just make sure we get through the night alive,” I said, offering a nervous smile as I placed my hand in the crook of his elbow.

The Drake Hotel ballroom was a sea of crystal chandeliers, flowing champagne, live orchestra music, and the most powerful figures in the Midwest. Cameras flashed incessantly as our black limousine pulled up to the red carpet.

When Lucas stepped out, the crowd of reporters erupted into a frenzy. And when he turned back and offered his hand to assist me out of the vehicle, the flashes turned into a blinding wall of light.

“Mr. Bennett! Who is your companion?”

“Mr. Bennett, is it true you suffered health complications this week?”

Lucas ignored the shouts, keeping his posture tall, proud, and completely unyielding. He pressed his hand against the small of my back, guiding me through the grand doors into the ballroom.

Across the crowded room, standing near a champagne tower, Julian and Evelyn froze.

May you like

Julian’s champagne glass paused halfway to his mouth. His eyes widened in sheer disbelief as he watched Lucas stride effortlessly across the marble floor—radiating power, vitality, and wealth—with the woman he had dismissed as a five-hundred-dollar cleaner shining like royalty beside him.

“Smile, Bailey,” Lucas whispered, his lips grazing my ear as the orchestra swelled. “The hunt has begun.”
