Chapter 12 - The Stolen Medical Records That Exposed A Decade-Old Conspiracy

The tender peace of the night was shattered at 4:00 AM by a sharp knock on the library door.
Marcus walked in, carrying an encrypted hard drive and a stack of confidential bank manifests.
“Boss,” Marcus said grimly. “Our cyber-security team cracked Julian’s private cloud storage. We found the digital paper trail.”
Lucas, who was sitting beside me on the sofa with his arm resting protectively around my shoulders, sat up straight. “What did you find?”
“It goes far deeper than the synthetic peptide at the Drake,” Marcus explained, plugging the drive into Lucas’s terminal. “Julian didn't just try to kill you last Tuesday. He has been systematically embezzling from Meridian’s offshore logistics subsidiary for the past four years—over four hundred million dollars funnelled into shell companies in the Cayman Islands.”
I leaned in, examining the scanned PDF documents appearing on the large monitor. As my eyes scanned the financial ledgers, my medical training caught something buried in the expense logs.
“Wait,” I said, pointing at a recurring wire transfer code. “Lucas, look at those vendor names. Bio-Pharma Nova Swiss and Apex Chemical Synthetics.”
Lucas frowned. “Those aren't logistics suppliers.”
“No,” I said, my blood turning cold as the realization struck me. “Those are unlicensed pharmaceutical research laboratories in Geneva. Julian has been ordering shipments of synthetic peptides and experimental cardiac inhibitors for over eighteen months. He didn't just poison you on Tuesday night. He was micro-dosing your private coffee machine on the executive floor for over a year, slowly degrading your heart muscle so your collapse would look like natural sudden death!”
Lucas’s face hardened into stone. The sheer, cold-blooded monstrosity of his brother’s betrayal hung heavy in the air.
“He was killing me by inches,” Lucas whispered, his knuckles turning white as he gripped the edge of the desk.
“And there’s more,” Marcus added, pulling up a secondary file. “Julian convened an emergency shareholders' vote for 9:00 AM this morning at the Meridian Tower boardroom. He has Evelyn and three compromised institutional board members ready to sign an irrevocable asset transfer to an offshore entity owned by Julian’s holding company. If that document is executed at nine o'clock, he strips you of all legal voting rights before our forensic evidence can be formally processed by the SEC.”
Lucas looked at the digital clock on the wall.
5:14 AM.
“They think I’m incapacitated in a hospital,” Lucas said, standing up to his full height. His posture was no longer that of an injured patient; he was an emperor preparing to reclaim his throne. “They think Bailey is locked in an interrogation cell. They think they’ve won.”
He turned to Marcus, his eyes blazing with cold, unyielding resolve.
“Mobilize the entire legal team. Notify the FBI’s Corporate Fraud division and the Cook County State’s Attorney. Tell them to have tactical units standing by on the forty-fifth floor at 8:55 AM.”
Lucas then turned to me, offering his hand.

“Bailey... will you walk into the fire with me one last time?”
I took his hand, gripping it tightly with unwavering conviction. “I started your heart, Lucas. I’m going to make sure no one ever stops it again.”
