Chapter 13 - The Final Showdown At Meridian Tower: Blood On The Marble Floor

At 8:45 AM, the 45th-floor boardroom of Meridian Tower was filled with tension thick enough to choke on.
Julian Bennett sat at the head of the massive mahogany conference table, wearing a triumphant smirk. Evelyn sat to his right, dabbing perfume on her wrists, while five major board members and three corporate attorneys reviewed the asset liquidation documents.
“Gentlemen,” Julian announced, checking his diamond Rolex. “Given my brother’s tragic and permanent mental breakdown following last night’s incident, it is our fiduciary duty to execute this restructuring immediately. Once these papers are signed, the Bennett trust assets will be safely transferred.”
Julian unscrewed the cap of his gold fountain pen, lowering the nib to the signature line.
BANG.
The heavy frosted-glass doors of the boardroom were blown open off their hinges, rebounding against the oak walls with a deafening crash.
Julian’s pen froze in mid-air.
Walking through the threshold was Lucas Bennett.
He was dressed in a razor-sharp charcoal three-piece suit, walking with absolute power and zero hesitation. Beside him, dressed in an elegant ivory business suit, was me. Behind us stood eight federal agents in tactical vests, the Cook County District Attorney, and Marcus with six armed security officers.
Evelyn screamed, dropping her pen.
Julian leaped out of his chair, his face draining of all color until he looked like a corpse. “Lucas?! You... you’re supposed to be in police custody! She was arrested!”
“The only person going to prison today, Julian, is you,” Lucas said, his voice echoing through the boardroom with the force of thunder.
The District Attorney stepped forward, unrolling a federal indictment.
“Julian Bennett and Evelyn Bennett, by order of the United States District Court, you are under arrest for attempted aggravated murder, corporate embezzlement, wire fraud, and witness tampering.”
“This is absurd!” Julian screamed, backing away toward the panoramic glass windows. “You have no proof! You can't prove anything!”
“We have the Swiss wire transfers, Julian,” I said, stepping forward and tossing a thick folder onto the center of the table. “We have your purchase orders for the synthetic peptide from Bio-Pharma Nova. We have the encrypted emails where you paid five hundred thousand dollars to contaminate Lucas’s private coffee supply. And we have the confession of the waiter from the Drake Hotel, who is currently singing to federal agents in the lobby.”
Julian looked around the room in sheer panic. The board members were already cowering, pushing their chairs back to distance themselves from him.
“You ruined everything!” Julian shrieked, his eyes wild with unhinged madness. “You were just a filthy cleaner! You were supposed to let him die on that elevator floor!”
In a blind, desperate frenzy, Julian reached into his breast pocket, pulling out a concealed ceramic snub-nosed revolver. He aimed it directly at my chest.
“If I’m going down, you’re coming with me!” Julian roared.
“Bailey, down!” Lucas bellowed.
Lucas didn't hesitate for a microsecond. Ignoring his fractured ribs and the searing pain in his chest, he threw his entire body across the table, shielding me completely.
BANG!
A gunshot tore through the boardroom.
Federal agents returned fire instantly with a non-lethal taser deployment. Julian was struck by two high-voltage probes, screaming as fifty thousand volts dropped him convulsing onto the marble floor, his gun skittering away across the glass.
Federal agents swarmed Julian, pinning him to the floor and locking heavy steel cuffs around his wrists.
I scrambled up, terrified. “Lucas! Lucas, were you hit?!”
Lucas was leaning against the table, panting heavily. The bullet had shattered the heavy mahogany trim inches from his shoulder, missing him by mere centimeters.
He looked down at me, his chest heaving, and pulled me into a fierce, breathless embrace in front of the entire stunned boardroom.
“I’m fine,” Lucas whispered, his voice trembling with relief as he kissed my forehead. “It’s over, Bailey. It’s finally over.”
