Chapter 15 - The Vows Forty-Five Floors High Where It All Began

That evening at sunset, Lucas brought me back to Meridian Tower.

We didn't go to the boardroom, and we didn't go to the penthouse.

We took the private elevator to the 45th floor.

When the doors opened, the entire floor was unrecognizable. The sterile corporate hallway had been transformed into an enchanting wonderland of thousands of glowing white tea lights, cascading white roses, and soft string-quartet music playing softly from hidden speakers.

Lucas led me by the hand to the exact brass threshold of Elevator Bank 4—the exact spot where, eight months earlier at 11:47 PM, I had fallen to my knees in the dark, desperate to save a dying stranger.

The floor-to-ceiling glass windows framed a breathtaking panorama of the Chicago skyline, reflecting the golden hues of the setting sun over Lake Michigan.

Lucas turned to face me. He took both of my hands into his, his stormy gray eyes shimmering with profound emotion.

“Eight months ago, my heart stopped on this floor,” Lucas said, his deep voice trembling with raw, unguarded love. “I was a dead man living an empty, cold life. And then you dropped out of the darkness. You bruised your hands, broke my ribs, and poured your own soul into my chest until I breathed again.”

He reached into his pocket and slowly dropped to one knee before me.

He opened a small black velvet box, revealing a flawless, radiant-cut five-carat emerald diamond surrounded by a halo of platinum.

“You didn't just restart my heart, Bailey Vance,” Lucas whispered, looking up at me with tears shining in his eyes. “You taught it how to beat. You gave me a reason to live, a reason to love, and a future I never dreamed I was worthy of. Will you do me the greatest honor of my life? Will you marry me?”

Tears streamed freely down my face. Joy, pure and overwhelming, filled every corner of my being.

“Yes,” I cried, dropping to my knees beside him so we were at eye level. “Yes, Lucas! A thousand times, yes!”

Lucas slipped the ring onto my finger, framed by the sparkling city lights, and pulled me into an impassioned, breathless kiss.

Eight months ago, I was an invisible night cleaner begging the universe for a miracle on a cold elevator floor. Tonight, in the arms of the man whose life I saved and whose love had saved me, I realized that miracles don't just happen in fairy tales.
