Chapter 9 - The Base Commander's Direct Order

At 14:00 on Monday, the commanding general of Fort Carson, Major General Marcus Cole, convened an extraordinary press briefing at the base headquarters.

Standing behind the podium were twenty senior military officers, the Mayor of Colorado Springs, and the Regional Director of Child Protective Services.

“The United States Army takes care of its own,” General Cole announced to the national press cameras. “Colonel Sarah Bennett is an American hero who has dedicated her life to the defense of this republic. The horrific, monstrous crimes committed against her daughter will be prosecuted with the full, unyielding weight of both state and federal law.”

General Cole announced the establishment of the Lily Bennett Protective Family Taskforce—a specialized inter-agency initiative to investigate and prosecute domestic financial exploitation and covert child abuse among family law networks across Colorado.

The Bennett name, once associated with high-society prestige in Colorado Springs, had become permanently synonymous with cowardice, cruelty, and absolute moral ruin.
