Chapter 7 - The Arrest At The Country Club
The arrest of Evelyn Bennett became the talk of Colorado Springs high society for decades.
Having posted a temporary bond on the initial booking through a bail bondsman, Evelyn had retreated to the exclusive Broadmoor Golf Club on Saturday afternoon to meet with her socialite friends for lunch, attempting to project an image of unshakeable innocence.
“It’s all a dreadful misunderstanding orchestrated by that uncouth military woman,” Evelyn told three wealthy patrons over iced tea. “Taylor will have the charges dropped by Monday.”
Suddenly, the glass double doors of the private dining room opened.
Six uniformed officers from the Colorado Springs Police Department, accompanied by four armed Military Police investigators, strode into the dining room.
Leading them was Detective Amanda Hayes, carrying an unsealed forty-count grand jury indictment.
The dining room fell dead silent.
Detective Hayes walked straight up to Evelyn’s table, pulled out a pair of heavy steel handcuffs, and slammed the indictment onto her linen tablecloth.
“Evelyn Bennett,” Detective Hayes announced, her voice carrying across the fifty high-society guests. “Your bond has been revoked by order of the State Supreme Court. You are under arrest for first-degree attempted murder, torture of a vulnerable minor, and conspiracy to commit grand financial larceny.”
Evelyn jumped to her feet, her pearl necklace catching on her wine glass, shattering the crystal onto the carpet.

“Take your hands off me! I am a pillar of this community!” she shrieked.
Two female officers grabbed Evelyn by her arms, forced her over the dining table, and clicked the handcuffs behind her back, marching her through the center of the country club as her former friends pulled their chairs away in utter disgust and horror.
