Chapter 13 - Courtroom Reckoning: Sentenced To Maximum Security

Six months after the freezing night in the garage, the final sentencing proceedings convened in the grand ceremonial courtroom of the El Paso County Judicial Complex.
The courtroom was packed to capacity with military personnel in dress uniforms, child advocacy groups, and international journalists.
I sat in the front row of the gallery, wearing my dress blue uniform with combat ribbons.
Beside me sat Lily.
She wore a soft lavender wool dress, her hair styled in neat braids, her cheeks rosy with radiant health, holding my hand with a calm, unshakeable grip.
At the defense table, Evelyn Bennett sat in bright orange prison scrubs, shackled at the waist and ankles. Her silver hair was tangled, her face haggard, her arrogant posture completely destroyed.
Beside her, Taylor Bennett sat weeping with his head buried in his cuffed hands.
Judge Margaret Thornton peered down from the elevated mahogany bench with eyes of cold, unyielding judgment.
“In my nearly three decades on the bench,” Judge Thornton stated, her voice echoing with absolute moral finality, “I have rarely encountered an act of human depravity so calculated, so cold-blooded, and so devoid of basic human conscience. You two individuals took an innocent, defenseless child—your own flesh and blood—and subjected her to the terrors of a living tomb for money and sadistic control.”
The judge struck her heavy wooden gavel.
“As to the defendant Taylor Bennett: for your cowardly complicity, breach of fiduciary trust, and active participation in felony child torture, you are hereby sentenced to twenty-two years in the Colorado Department of Corrections at Fremont Correctional Facility, with total forfeiture of your law license and all estate rights.”
Taylor burst into loud, bitter sobs as the bailiffs pulled him to his feet.
“And as to the defendant Evelyn Bennett,” Judge Thornton continued, her gaze locking onto the trembling matriarch. “For attempted first-degree murder and systematic child torture, you are hereby sentenced to thirty-five years at the Denver Women’s Correctional Facility, with zero eligibility for early parole.”

The gavel struck the sound block with the definitive finality of an iron cell door closing forever.
Evelyn was hauled away in chains, screaming curses into the empty air, completely eradicated from public life forever.
