Chapter 10 - Evelyn’s Psychotic Jailhouse Phone Call

Two weeks before the trial, Evelyn Bennett made one final, unhinged attempt to assert her dominance.

Using her allotted weekly phone call from the county detention center, she dialed my private mobile number.

I pressed record on my military communications slate and answered the call.

“Sarah,” Evelyn’s voice hissed through the speaker, raspy, hateful, and completely unrepentant. “You think you’ve won, don't you? You think you can lock me in a cage like an animal?”

“You are where you belong, Evelyn,” I replied calmly.

“That little girl is weak!” Evelyn snarled, her voice rising into a demonic, psychotic pitch. “She had your dirty, common blood in her veins! I was trying to freeze the weakness out of her! If Taylor had been a real man, he would have finished what we started! You will never have peace, Sarah! Every time Lily looks at the snow, she will remember my face!”

“Thank you for that statement, Evelyn,” I said softly.

“What?!”

“This call was routed directly through the District Attorney’s recording bridge,” I explained. “You just provided the prosecution with direct evidence of premeditated malice and total lack of remorse for the sentencing hearing.”

Evelyn let out a bloodcurdling scream of rage before the automated prison system disconnected the line with a sharp click.
