Chapter 5 - The Emergency Protective Custody Hearing

At 9:00 AM on Friday morning, Courtroom 4B of the El Paso County District Court was packed with attorneys, county social workers, and local press.

Taylor Bennett sat at the defense table, accompanied by Arthur Sterling—the most expensive, ruthless family law attorney in Colorado. Taylor had pulled himself together, wearing his best pinstripe suit, attempting to project the image of a respectable, grieving father who had been victimized by an overzealous military ex-wife.

Judge Margaret Thornton—a seasoned jurist known for her zero-tolerance stance on parental misconduct—sat at the elevated bench, reviewing the emergency motions.

“Your Honor,” Arthur Sterling began in a booming, theatrical baritone, “this is an egregious abuse of military authority. Colonel Sarah Bennett has weaponized her rank to launch a witch hunt against my client and his elderly mother over what was clearly an accidental household incident. Colonel Bennett is an active-duty combat soldier whose deployments make her fundamentally unfit for sole custody!”

Judge Thornton slowly lowered her reading glasses, looking down at Sterling with piercing, unbothered eyes.

“Counsel, are you finished?” Judge Thornton asked coolly.

“We request the immediate restoration of joint custody and the dismissal of all civil restraining orders!” Sterling declared.

I stood up from the plaintiff’s table, dressed in my immaculate Army service uniform, flanked by Captain Robert Hayes from the Judge Advocate General’s Corps.

“Your Honor,” Captain Hayes stated, stepping to the podium. “The Department of the Army, in coordination with the 4th Judicial District Attorney, presents Exhibit A: forensic server footage recovered from the defendant’s residence.”

Hayes plugged a gold-plated USB drive into the courtroom projection terminal.

The giant eighty-inch display on the courtroom wall illuminated.

The audio of Lily’s muffled, terrified screams from inside the freezer echoed through the vaulted ceiling of the courtroom with sickening, agonizing clarity.

Then came the video of Taylor standing beside the freezer, sipping his coffee, telling his mother to leave his daughter in the freezing dark for fifteen minutes.

Arthur Sterling’s mouth dropped open. The paperwork in his hands slipped onto the floor.

Taylor Bennett shrank into his chair, pulling his hands over his face as gasps of absolute, horrified outrage erupted across the gallery.

Judge Thornton’s face transformed into a mask of pure, righteous fury. She slammed her heavy wooden gavel onto the sound block with such force the crack sounded like a gunshot.

“Quiet in this courtroom!” Judge Thornton roared.

The room fell dead silent.

Judge Thornton pointed a trembling, furious finger directly at Taylor Bennett.

“In my twenty-eight years on the bench,” Judge Thornton stated, her voice shaking with disgust, “I have rarely witnessed such a grotesque, cowardly betrayal of parental duty. You are a disgrace to the legal profession and an absolute danger to human life.”

She picked up her pen, signing the master decree with aggressive strokes.

“Effective immediately: all parental rights of Taylor Bennett are terminated on an emergency basis. Sole legal and physical custody of Lily Bennett is awarded exclusively and permanently to Colonel Sarah Bennett. A lifetime protective order is issued barring Taylor Bennett and Evelyn Bennett from ever coming within one thousand yards of this child.”

Judge Thornton looked at the two armed sheriff’s deputies standing at the back of the courtroom.

“Deputies,” the judge ordered. “Take Taylor Bennett into custody immediately on charges of felony child abuse and accessory to attempted murder.”

The deputies marched forward, hauled Taylor out of his leather chair, and clicked heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists in front of thirty flashing press cameras.
