Chapter 9 - The Secret Ledger: Forged Signatures and Hidden Debts

The following morning, the Serrano estate was buzzing with intense activity. A private security team hired by Alvin stood guard at every entrance, while Inez Vance and a team of forensic digital examiners set up operations in the grand library.
Manuel sat in his favorite leather armchair—returned to its rightful place near the fireplace—sipping hot coffee that Carmen had brewed in her own restored kitchen.
"Alvin, look at what we uncovered in Derek's home office safe," Inez said, placing a thick leather-bound binder on the desk.
Alvin opened the ledger. It wasn't just a record of debts; it was a meticulous blueprint of systemic fraud.
"Derek and Veronica had created an entire network of synthetic identities," Inez explained. "They used your father's pristine credit rating—which had never missed a single payment in fifty years—to co-sign loans for shady construction companies managed by Veronica’s brother, Julian Caldwell. Julian is currently under federal indictment in Florida for real estate wire fraud."
Alvin traced his finger over a signature on a commercial promissory note. "This isn't Dad's signature. It's a digital trace from his 2012 tax returns."
"Exactly," Inez confirmed. "Every single contract they executed over the last eighteen months is criminally invalid. We’ve already submitted the handwriting analysis to the Chatham County District Attorney’s office. An arrest warrant for Julian Caldwell has just been issued, and an expanded indictment for Derek is being drafted right now."
Manuel set his coffee cup down, his hands steady for the first time in months. "Alvin... what will happen to Derek?"
Alvin walked over to his father, kneeling beside his chair. "Dad, Derek chose to align himself with criminals who preyed on you and Mom. The law has to take its course. If I step in to bail him out now, he will spend the rest of his life looking for another way to destroy you."

Manuel closed his eyes, a heavy tear rolling down his weathered cheek. "I built this home to be a sanctuary for my sons. I never imagined one of them would try to turn it into my tomb."
"The sanctuary is restored, Dad," Alvin said softly, squeezing his father's calloused hand. "And nobody will ever threaten you again."
