Chapter 4 - The Extravagant Dinner Party Ambush

By six-thirty that evening, the front circular driveway of the Serrano family estate on Gaston Street was packed with high-end luxury vehicles. A black Mercedes Maybach, two Range Rovers, and Derek’s leased silver Porsche were lined up beneath the hanging lanterns.
Inside, soft classical jazz played from the built-in speaker system. Caterers in black ties carried silver trays loaded with seared scallops, caviar canapés, and flutes of Cristal champagne.
Veronica stood near the grand fireplace, wearing an emerald satin evening gown and basking in the compliments of the assembled guests. Derek, holding a glass of Scotch, laughed loudly with Marcus Kane—a broad-shouldered man in an expensive three-piece suit with a predatory smile and sharp, ruthless eyes.
"I have to hand it to you, Derek," Kane chuckled, clinking his glass against Derek’s. "Convincing the city’s historical board to rezone this double-lot parcel for boutique luxury suites wasn't easy. Once we finalize the paperwork tonight, my firm will wire the first tranche of two point five million into Caldwell Heritage Acquisitions."
Derek puffed his chest out, intoxicated by the illusion of power. "It was all about managing the previous occupants, Marcus. My parents were sentimental about the place, but business is business. They’re... comfortably settled elsewhere."
"And the title is completely clear?" Kane asked, narrowing his eyes slightly. "My underwriters flagged a minor administrative hold this morning."
Veronica stepped in smoothly, placing a hand on Kane’s arm. "Just a bureaucratic clerical error at the county office, Marcus. Derek signed all the primary authorizations as the sole executor. By midnight, this entire estate belongs to our partnership."
Suddenly, the heavy front double doors swung open.
The laughter in the foyer sputtered into silence as a tall, imposing figure stepped across the threshold.
Alvin Serrano entered without knocking, accompanied by two men in dark suits carrying leather briefcases and Inez Vance, whose sharp, professional demeanor radiated absolute authority.
Derek froze, the glass of Scotch slipping slightly in his hand. "Alvin? What... what are you doing here? You weren't supposed to visit until next month."
Veronica’s face drained of color, but she quickly masked her panic with a forced, icy glare. "Alvin, this is a private business dinner. You can't just barge into our home without calling first."
Alvin didn't look at Veronica. He slowly walked across the imported Persian rug, his polished leather shoes echoing rhythmically against the hardwood floor. He stopped in the center of the room, looking at the lavish spread, the expensive champagne, and the wealthy guests holding their breath.
"Your home, Veronica?" Alvin asked, his voice low, steady, and vibrating with an authority that commanded the entire room.
He turned his gaze toward Derek.
"Derek, where are Mom and Dad?"
Derek swallowed hard, casting a frantic glance at Veronica before trying to regain his composure. "They’re resting, Alvin. They aren't feeling well. Mom had a bad turn with her arthritis, so we set them up in the rear suites where it's quiet."
"The rear suites?" Alvin echoed, taking a slow step toward his younger brother. "Is that what we're calling the eight-by-ten uninsulated tool shed behind the laundry room now?"
Gasps broke out among the dinner guests. Marcus Kane’s eyes widened, his sharp gaze immediately darting between Derek and the imposing stranger standing before them.
"Alvin, lower your voice!" Derek hissed, stepping forward with his fists clenched. "You don't know what you're talking about! We take care of them every single day!"
"You locked your mother out in the damp night air to eat cold scraps off paper plates while you drank five-hundred-dollar champagne with real estate sharks," Alvin said, his voice cutting through the room like a scalpel.
Veronica stepped forward, her voice rising into a shrill screech. "Get out of this house right now, Alvin! Derek holds the legal deed to this property! You have no standing here! If you don't leave this second, I’m calling the Chatham County Sheriff to have you arrested for trespassing!"

Alvin smiled—a cold, terrifying smile that sent a shiver through every person in the room.
"Call them, Veronica," Alvin said calmly, pulling a chair out from the dining table and sitting down. "Because the Sheriff is already on his way. And he isn't coming for me."
