Chapter 5 - The Confrontation in the Grand Dining Hall

The tension in the grand dining hall was suffocating. None of the guests dared to move. Marcus Kane stepped forward, setting his bourbon glass down heavily on the mahogany table.

"Look, pal, I don't know who you are," Kane growled, adjusting his diamond cufflinks. "I’m Marcus Kane. I’m the primary financier of Caldwell Heritage Acquisitions. We hold a legal lien and an executed purchase option on this entire property. Whatever family squabble you have, take it outside."

Alvin didn't even look up at Kane. He simply gestured to Inez Vance.

Inez opened her briefcase, pulling out a stack of certified legal documents and slamming them down on the center of the dining table directly in front of Marcus Kane.

"Mr. Kane," Inez said with razor-sharp precision. "I am Inez Vance, senior managing partner at Vance & Sterling, representing Manuel and Carmen Serrano. What you hold is a forged Quitclaim Deed filed without legal authority over an irrevocable 1984 Master Land Trust."

Kane frowned, grabbing the papers and skimming through them furiously. "What are you talking about? Derek presented a notarized power of attorney."

"The power of attorney was executed while Manuel Serrano was under heavy sedation at St. Joseph’s Hospital," Inez stated, pulling out a signed affidavit from the attending physician. "Furthermore, the notary who stamped Derek’s document happens to be Veronica Caldwell’s first cousin—who had her notary commission revoked by the state of Georgia six months ago for document fraud."

Veronica’s face went chalk-white. She gripped the back of a dining chair to steady herself. "That’s a lie! Derek is the rightful owner!"

"Derek is an unemployed parasite who hasn't earned an honest paycheck in seven years," Alvin said, rising from his chair and stepping directly into Derek’s personal space.

Derek shrank back, his bravado completely evaporating. "Alvin... listen to me... we were doing this for the family! We were going to buy Mom and Dad a luxury condo on St. Simons Island! We were going to take care of them!"

"By locking them in a shed?" Alvin roared, the icy control finally cracking into righteous thunder that shook the room. "By stealing the four thousand dollars a month I sent to pay for Mom’s physical therapy and spending it on your tailored suits and your wife’s jewelry?"

At that moment, the side doors opened.

Manuel and Carmen walked into the dining room. They were no longer wearing their soiled, worn clothes. Alvin had arranged for them to be dressed in elegant, tailored attire. Manuel stood tall, his silver hair neatly combed, holding his wife’s hand with quiet, unbroken majesty.

The guests parted like the Red Sea.

Carmen looked at Veronica with tears shining in her eyes—not tears of weakness, but of profound maternal heartbreak. "Veronica... we took you into this home when your own family had cast you out. We gave you the master bedroom because Derek said you had back pain. And you made my husband beg for a bowl of rice in his own kitchen."

Veronica opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out. The sheer shame and exposure in front of Savannah’s elite investors rendered her completely mute.

Marcus Kane dropped the documents onto the table, his face turning dark with murderous rage as he turned toward Derek.

"You son of a bitch," Kane hissed. "You pledged a fraudulent title as collateral for a four-hundred-and-twenty-thousand-dollar bridge loan?"

Derek began hyperventilating. "Marcus, wait! We can fix this! We can still negotiate with Alvin!"

"There is no negotiation, Derek," Alvin said coldly. "The bank accounts associated with your shell company have been frozen. The corporate cards in your pocket are worthless plastic. And Marcus Kane’s predatory loan? Inez has already filed a notice of lis pendens and a criminal fraud complaint with the District Attorney."

Kane snatched his coat from the back of the chair, glaring at Derek with venomous hatred. "My legal team will be filing an emergency freeze on every asset you and your wife possess by tomorrow morning, Derek. You owe my firm four hundred and twenty thousand dollars, plus interest. If I don't see those funds in seventy-two hours, I will personally hand the fraud evidence to the federal prosecutors."

Kane turned and stormed toward the front door, shouting at the other investors, "Get out! The deal is dead!"

Within ninety seconds, the dining room emptied completely, leaving only Derek, Veronica, Alvin, their parents, and Inez standing amid the abandoned plates of half-eaten luxury food.
