Chapter 3 - Crashing the Throne Room

The ballroom was buzzing with anticipation.
At the center of the elevated stage, Arthur Kensington stood beside his daughter, Sabrina, who looked radiant in a champagne Dior gown. Beside her, Preston looked impeccably smug, straightening the cufflinks Alex had given him for his birthday two years ago.
Preston checked his watch, grinning. He thought Alex was already in the back of a yellow cab heading uptown, tears in her eyes, nursing the polite lie he’d spun about a sudden panic attack.
The microphone chimed, echoing across the crystal chandeliers.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Arthur Kensington boomed, his voice carrying the full weight of old money. "Tonight, Kensington Capital celebrates not only our most profitable quarter, but a union of vision and ambition. I am proud to announce the promotion of Preston Vance to Senior Managing Director, and his impending marriage to my daughter, Sabrina."
Applause rippled through the room. Preston took Sabrina’s hand, stepping forward to deliver his rehearsed remarks.
"Thank you, Arthur," Preston beamed, basking in the flash of society cameras. "This journey has been about finding true partnership—about choosing loyalty and class above all else—"
The heavy double doors at the back of the grand ballroom didn't just open—they were flung wide by four private security guards in immaculate charcoal suits.
The applause died instantly. The room went so quiet that the clink of a falling fork sounded like a gunshot.
Walking through the doorway was Alexandra Sterling.
She had wiped away any trace of vulnerability. Her dark hair cascaded in polished waves over her bare shoulders, the emerald silk of her gown gleaming like liquid armor under the chandeliers. But what sucked the air out of the room was the man beside her.
Dante Moretti walked with his hand resting possessively on the small of her back.
He towered over the crowd, radiating raw authority and lethal charisma. Every billionaire, senator, and socialite in the room parted like the Red Sea, their faces frozen in stunned disbelief. Dante Moretti had never attended a public charity gala in five years; he certainly had never escorted a woman on his arm.
Preston’s smile vanished. His jaw dropped, the color draining from his face until he looked like a corpse in a tuxedo. "Alex...?" he muttered into the live microphone, the sound amplifying into a sickening croak across the room.
Alex didn't blink. With her head held high and a razor-sharp smile playing on her lips, she let Dante guide her straight toward the foot of the stage.
Sabrina Kensington’s face twisted in fury and horror. "What is the meaning of this?" she hissed, stepping toward the edge of the stage. "Security! Get this woman out of here!"
Nobody moved. The hotel security guards stood at attention, their eyes fixed firmly on Dante Moretti.

Dante stopped at the base of the stairs, looking up at Preston as if he were a speck of dirt on his bespoke leather shoes.
"Don't let us interrupt, Vance," Dante’s baritone rumbled effortlessly across the silent room. "You were speaking about loyalty. Please... continue."
