Chapter 2 - The Devil's Proposal at Midnight

Alex froze. Her breath caught in her throat as the man turned slowly.

Dante Moretti.

Even in high society, his name was whispered like a threat. He was the head of the Moretti Syndicate—a man who owned shipping lanes, private security empires, and half the real estate between Wall Street and the Hudson. The papers called him an untouchable venture capitalist; the streets knew him as the apex predator of the Eastern seaboard. Tall, broad-shouldered, and wearing a custom Tom Ford tuxedo that looked like armor, his dark eyes fixed on her with predatory sharpness. A faint, jagged scar sliced through his left eyebrow down toward his cheekbone, giving his impossibly handsome face a lethal edge.

"Mr. Moretti," Alex managed, her voice trembling before she forced her spine to lock straight. "I... I apologize. I hit the wrong button."

Dante took a slow sip of his scotch, his gaze raking over her emerald dress, the tight clench of her jaw, and the unshed tears gleaming in her eyes. "You're running."

"I am leaving."

"Running," he corrected softly, taking two measured steps toward her. The air pressure in the room seemed to drop. "And given that you just came from the mezzanine corridor where Preston Vance and Sabrina Kensington are finalizing their neat little execution of your life, I'd say you aren't running fast enough."

Alex’s stomach plummeted into an abyss. "You know?"

"I know everything that happens in this hotel. I own it," Dante said calmly, setting his glass down on a dark marble console. "I also know that Vance has been funneling stolen Byzantine and Roman relics through Kensington’s shell company, using your Sabbes credentials to forge provenance certificates."

"Why haven't you stopped him?" Anger flared through the shock, hot and sudden. "If you knew he was committing federal crimes—"

"Because Vance is a mosquito," Dante interrupted smoothly. "And Kensington is the stagnant pond he feeds in. I don't swat mosquitoes, Miss Sterling. I drain the entire swamp."

He stepped closer, close enough that Alex could smell cedarwood, expensive tobacco, and rain. The sheer physical presence of the man made her instincts scream in alarm, yet under the panic, an intoxicating rush of adrenaline ignited her blood.

"Preston thinks he’s walking down to the ballroom in ten minutes to announce his engagement to Sabrina and leave you holding the noose," Dante murmured, his voice dipping low and hypnotic. "By midnight, the forged authentication files will be sent to the Southern District prosecutors. You won't even make it to Monday before the FBI knocks on your door."

"I'll go to the police right now," she whispered, her hands balling into tight fists. "I'll tell them—"

"Tell them what? That your boyfriend of three years used your password while you were asleep? Without hard evidence, you're the signature on the paper. You're the casualty." Dante tilted his head, his dark eyes flashing with dangerous amusement. "Unless you change the board entirely."

"How?"

Dante reached out, his long, calloused fingers gently catching her chin, tilting her face upward. His touch was warm, commanding, and sent an electric shock straight through her veins.

"Use me to hurt your ex," Dante smirked, his thumb tracing the sharp line of her jaw. "Walk back into that ballroom on my arm. Let the room see who you belong to. Give me the inside ledger from Sabbes, and I will tear Preston Vance and the Kensington empire down to ash."

Alex stared into his unyielding eyes. "And what do you want in return?"

Dante’s smirk widened into something dark, possessive, and utterly breathtaking.

"You're leaving with me tonight. You move into my estate. You play the part of my woman until every single person who tried to destroy you is begging for mercy." He paused, his gaze dropping to her lips before meeting her eyes again. "And when this is over, Alexandra... we'll see if you ever want to leave."

Alex felt the world shifting beneath her feet. She could walk out, become a disgraced criminal, and let Preston triumph. Or she could step into the fire with the devil himself.

She drew a deep, ragged breath and held his gaze without flinching.

"Get me down to that ballroom, Mr. Moretti."
