Chapter 9 - The Alliance of Traitors: Warren Pike's Ambush and the Fall of the Cole Empire

While Claire was delivering her daughter in Rhode Island, the final phase of the underworld’s collapse had detonated in New York.
At the Port of Newark, Warren Pike’s remaining loyalist captains had attempted a desperate, violent raid on Adrian Cole’s primary shipping terminal to seize physical control of the contraband containers before the federal indictments arrived.
Adrian had been waiting for them.
The gun battle across the rain-soaked shipping yards had lasted forty-five minutes. Adrian, fighting alongside a dozen of his most loyal dockworkers and security men, had systematically crushed the raid.
By 4:00 AM, the docks were illuminated by the flashing red and blue lights of fifty federal law enforcement vehicles.
Special Agent David Miller of the FBI Organized Crime Division walked into the primary warehouse, flanked by ten heavily armed federal agents.
Adrian Cole stood in the center of the warehouse, his hands raised calmly, his firearm already lying on an empty wooden pallet ten feet away.
“Adrian Cole,” Agent Miller said, presenting an arrest warrant. “You are under arrest for conspiracy to violate the RICO Act, interstate wire fraud, and racketeering.”
Adrian didn't flinch. He didn't look angry. He looked profoundly relieved.
“Agent Miller,” Adrian said calmly, offering his wrists for the handcuffs. “I have full cooperation terms ready. The master ledgers, decryption keys, and full testimony regarding Warren Pike’s trafficking routes have already been submitted to your Boston office by my wife’s legal team.”
Agent Miller paused, surprised by the total lack of resistance from a man who had ruled the New York waterfront with an iron fist for a decade.

“Your wife did a thorough job, Cole,” Miller said, clicking the steel cuffs onto Adrian’s wrists. “She left you completely naked legally, but she also left you alive.”
“I know,” Adrian murmured as he was escorted into the back of the armored federal transport. “She was always the smart one.”
