Chapter 6 - The Midnight Trap in Providence and a Mother's Unforgiving Eye

In the quiet, wood-paneled living room of the Narragansett cottage, Claire Cole sat by a roaring stone fireplace with a steaming mug of herbal tea.

Outside, the Atlantic Ocean roared against the rocky coastline, gray and violent under the winter sky.

Marcus Vance stood by the bay window, lowering a set of military-grade night-vision binoculars.

“The decoy worked,” Vance said calmly, turning back toward Claire.

Claire looked up, her face calm and composed despite the dark circles under her eyes. “Did they take the bait?”

“Pike’s mercenaries intercepted the dummy Subaru at a private airfield outside of Providence twenty minutes ago,” Vance explained, pulling up a live encrypted tactical feed on his rugged laptop. “They breached the hangar expecting to find you and the ledgers. Rhode Island State Police and federal task force agents were waiting. Pike lost eight of his top enforcers, and two federal arrest warrants were just unsealed for his interstate racketeering operations.”

Rebecca Shaw, who was reviewing legal filings at the dining table, smiled thinly.

“Adrian’s legitimate empire is currently suffocating,” Rebecca reported. “The financial freeze you triggered has forced Adrian’s corporate board to call an emergency meeting. They are threatening to strip him of the chairmanship unless he produces the hard drives by Monday.”

Claire gently rubbed her stomach. The baby kicked, a firm, reassuring flutter against her ribs.

“Adrian won't produce the hard drives,” Claire said softly. “Because he doesn't have them. And for the first time in his life, he has no leverage.”

“What is your next move, Claire?” Marcus Vance asked, studying her with genuine professional respect. In all his years of dealing with cartel figures and high-stakes extractions, he had rarely seen someone maintain this level of cold, surgical clarity under extreme pressure.

“We don't just survive this, Marcus,” Claire said, her blue eyes turning as sharp as shattered glass. “We end it. Adrian and Pike have operated like untouchable kings on this coast for a decade because they assumed nobody could untangle their financial web. I spent five years learning their entire system. I know every bribe, every dirty dock contract, and every off-the-books bank account.”

She opened her laptop and connected one of the titanium SSD drives.

“I am going to hand over ninety percent of Warren Pike’s illicit distribution logs to the Federal Organized Crime Strike Force in Boston,” Claire declared. “That will eliminate Pike permanently. As for Adrian...”

Claire paused, looking down at the ultrasound photograph resting beside her tea.

“Adrian will be left with a choice,” Claire continued, her voice devoid of hatred, replaced by absolute finality. “He can either spend the rest of his life in a federal penitentiary, or he can sign full legal surrender of every legitimate asset into a trust for our daughter, grant me an uncontested divorce with sole custody, and walk away from this life forever.”

“And if he refuses?” Rebecca asked.

“Adrian won't refuse,” Claire said quietly. “Because deep down, beneath the pride and the violence, Adrian knows that I am the only person left in this world who can save his life.”
