Chapter 13 - The Trial of the Century and the Public Stripping of Brooke Lawson

In September, the federal trial of Warren Pike and Miles Carter concluded in the Federal District Court of Boston.
The courtroom was packed with journalists, corporate magnates, and law enforcement officials from across the nation.
Claire Cole did not need to step onto the witness stand. The three titanium SSD hard drives she had taken on Christmas Eve provided over ten thousand pages of undeniable, forensic financial evidence.
Miles Carter was sentenced to thirty-five years in maximum-security federal prison with no possibility of parole for racketeering, attempted murder, and corporate espionage.
Warren Pike received two consecutive life sentences for interstate narcotics trafficking and violent racketeering.
Outside the courthouse, a different kind of justice was served.
Brooke Lawson, dressed in a gaudy designer outfit that looked increasingly desperate, was swarmed by reporters on the courthouse steps.
“Miss Lawson! Is it true you are facing civil fraud charges for accepting stolen syndicate funds from Adrian Cole?” a reporter shouted, thrusting a microphone in her face.
Brooke covered her face with an expensive leather handbag, her eyes wide with panic as federal marshals stepped forward to serve her with a civil asset forfeiture notice.
“I didn't know anything about the businesses!” Brooke screamed hysterically. “Adrian bought me that ring! He promised to marry me!”
“Miss Lawson,” a federal officer announced loudly for the cameras. “Under federal forfeiture statutes, the three-carat diamond ring and all luxury items purchased with illicit funds from Cole Maritime accounts between January and December of last year are subject to immediate seizure.”

In front of twenty live television cameras, Brooke Lawson was forced to slide the diamond ring off her finger and drop it into an evidence bag, sobbing in utter humiliation as the crowd mocked her downfall.
The public had finally seen the truth: the mistress who had danced under the chandeliers on Christmas Eve had been stripped of everything, while the pregnant wife who had walked away in silence was now the sovereign ruler of the entire kingdom.
