Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Boardroom: When the Ghost Controls the Bank Accounts

By seven o'clock on Christmas morning, the financial devastation Claire had orchestrated began to trigger across the global markets.
In the executive penthouse of Cole Maritime Holdings in lower Manhattan, three senior vice presidents and two corporate attorneys stood around the mahogany conference table in complete panic.
Adrian Cole strode into the boardroom, wearing a fresh charcoal suit, his face pale and eyes sunken from thirty-six hours without sleep.
“Give me the status,” Adrian demanded, slamming his palm onto the table.
The chief financial officer, Arthur Vance (no relation to Marcus), adjusted his glasses with trembling hands.
“Adrian... it’s a total blackout,” Arthur stammered. “At six o’clock this morning, when the European markets opened, an automated multi-signature security override was executed on all eleven of our primary offshore holding entities in Zurich and Luxembourg.”
“Who executed it?” Adrian snapped.
“The primary administrator of the family trust,” Arthur said, his voice dropping to a whisper. “Claire.”
Adrian’s jaw clenched so tightly a muscle twitched in his cheek. “Override it. Use my master key.”
“We tried!” Arthur cried. “The protocol requires dual-factor biometric authorization. It was designed so that neither of you could liquidate the funds without the other's digital token. Claire took the physical hardware tokens from your safe. The accounts are completely locked down for thirty days pending an international forensic audit.”
Adrian closed his eyes, taking a slow, ragged breath.
She had trapped him.
Without those accounts, Adrian could not pay the six million dollars due to the dockworkers' union at noon to release three cargo ships currently docked in Newark. He could not pay the monthly retainer to the corrupt state senators who kept federal indictments at bay.
And Warren Pike knew it.
Right on cue, Adrian’s private phone vibrated on the table.
The caller ID showed an unlisted number from Philadelphia.
Adrian tapped the speakerphone. “Pike.”
A gravelly, mocking laugh echoed through the boardroom.
“Merry Christmas, Adrian,” Warren Pike drawled. “I hear you threw quite a party last night. Beautiful ring you gave that little blonde girl. Too bad your wife didn't stick around for the cake.”
“If you touch a hair on Claire’s head, Pike, I will tear Philadelphia apart piece by piece,” Adrian said, his voice dropping into a chilling, lethal whisper.
“Oh, relax, Adrian. I don't have her,” Pike chuckled. “Your girl is smarter than both of us. My scouts at the state line lost her Subaru in the blizzard near New London. But let’s be honest: a seven-month-pregnant woman with no army can’t hide forever. Miles already gave me the decrypt keys to your secondary distribution lines before you shot him. By New Year’s Day, Cole Maritime belongs to me.”
“Miles is in my basement, bleeding out,” Adrian replied coldly. “And you’re talking to a dead man walking, Pike. Because the moment I find my wife, I am coming for your head.”
May you like
Adrian hung up the phone before Pike could answer.
He turned to Dominic, who stood by the door. “Get the private intelligence contractors in Northern Virginia on the line. I don't care if it costs fifty million dollars. I want every satellite covering New England pointed at every coastal town from Rhode Island to Maine. Find my wife!”
