Chapter 4 - The Hunt Begins and the Empty Cradle in the Greenwich Penthouse

The basement beneath the Greenwich mansion smelled of damp concrete and copper.

Adrian Cole stood under a single hanging industrial bulb, his crisp white tuxedo shirt stained with grease and Miles Carter’s blood. His knuckles were raw, his eyes bloodshot, and his jaw set in a line of pure, unadulterated fury.

Miles Carter was slumped in a heavy metal chair, zip-tied securely, his left eye swollen shut and blood dripping from his split chin onto his designer shirt.

“I’ll ask you one last time, Miles,” Adrian whispered, leaning down until his lips were inches from the traitor’s ear. “Who gave the order to track Claire’s vehicle?”

Miles let out a wet, rattling laugh. “You... you think I’m tracking her? Adrian... Pike’s men have had your house bugged for six months. They knew she had the ledgers before you even knew she was gone.”

Adrian grabbed Miles by the throat, his fingers digging into the carotid artery until Miles began to convulse.

“Where is Warren Pike?” Adrian snarled.

“He’s in New York,” Miles choked out. “At the Pierre. Waiting for the signal. But it doesn't matter, boss. You’re finished. Without those hard drives, your offshore accounts are frozen by the Swiss banks on a secondary security protocol Claire set up. You don't have the money to pay your dock captains. You don't have the political bribes to stop the feds on Monday morning. Your wife didn't just run away... she took your entire empire in her purse!”

Adrian slammed Miles’s head back against the chair, knocking him unconscious.

He turned to his two remaining loyal lieutenants, Frank and Dominic, who stood near the steel door looking visibly rattled.

“Put him in the cold storage room,” Adrian ordered coldly. “Double the perimeter guards around the estate. Bring every available soldier from Brooklyn and Queens up to Connecticut. We are in a state of war.”

“Boss,” Dominic hesitated, clearing his throat. “What about Miss Lawson? She’s upstairs in the parlor, crying. She wants to know if she should pack to go to the city.”

Adrian’s eyes flashed with absolute disgust.

“Get her out of my sight,” Adrian said, his voice deadly quiet. “Put her in a town car, send her to a hotel in Midtown, and cut off her credit cards. If she speaks to a single reporter, throw her out on the street.”

Dominic nodded quickly and hurried up the stairs.

Adrian walked back up to the master suite. The grand mansion, which had been filled with music and laughter just three hours ago, was now tomb-silent, guarded by heavily armed men pacing the corridors with assault rifles.

Adrian walked into the nursery.

The room was painted a soft, serene lavender and cream. Claire had designed every inch of it herself. The solid oak crib was dressed in handmade linen. A plush white teddy bear sat waiting in the corner. On the wall hung a wooden plaque Claire had carved: Grace Cole.

Grace. That was the name Claire had chosen for their daughter.

Adrian had been too busy negotiating a shipping port contract to attend the last three ultrasound appointments. He had told Claire that business came first, that he was securing their family’s future.

In reality, he had been taking Brooke to private villas in the Bahamas.

Adrian sank onto the edge of the empty crib, burying his face in his hands.

For the first time in his adult life, the terrifying mafia boss felt tears burning behind his eyes.

He had believed he was invincible. He had believed that Claire was an immutable constant—a gentle, forgiving presence that would always wait for him in the shadows while he chased his ambitions and indulged his vanities.

He had traded a queen for a cheap reflection, and now the queen had taken the kingdom and his unborn child into the dark.

“Claire,” Adrian whispered into the empty nursery, his voice breaking in the cold air. “Please... just let me find you alive.”
