Chapter 6 - The Boardroom Ambush and the Fall of Richard Sterling

By 9:00 AM the following morning, the executive boardroom on the 50th floor was filled with high-ranking board members, corporate attorneys, and major shareholders.

Tension hung in the air like thick smoke.

I walked in beside Dante, wearing a tailored navy suit that cleverly hid my bandages, though the faint discoloration beneath my makeup was still visible. My head was held high.

Richard Sterling sat at the far end of the long mahogany table, looking smug. He had a stack of financial documents before him and was already whispering into the ear of Elena Ramos.

When Dante entered, the room went dead silent.

He didn't take off his coat. He walked with measured, predatory grace straight to the head of the table and sat down. I took my seat to his immediate right, placing my laptop open in front of me.

“Let us begin,” Dante said, his voice cutting through the silence like a scalpel. “Senior Vice President Sterling requested this emergency session to address the Gary port logistics.”

Richard cleared his throat and stood up, buttoning his jacket with exaggerated confidence.

“Thank you, Dante. Gentlemen, ladies... I will be direct. In light of the recent violent incidents surrounding our logistical staff—namely, the brutal attack on Ms. Harper Vance—it is evident that current leadership can no longer guarantee the safety of our supply chains or our personnel.”

A murmur broke out among the older board members.

Richard smirked, leaning forward on his knuckles. “Furthermore, our primary logistics partner in Indiana has threatened to terminate our contract unless we transfer the maritime rights of the Gary terminal to Vance Logistics LLC. I have prepared the emergency transfer resolution today. If Dante refuses to sign, the board must vote for his immediate suspension under Section 4 of our corporate bylaws.”

Dante didn't flinch. He didn't even blink.

“Are you quite finished, Richard?” Dante asked quietly.

Richard’s smirk faltered slightly. “The numbers speak for themselves. You are compromising our multi-billion dollar enterprise for personal stubbornness.”

Dante gestured toward me. “Harper. Show the board what the numbers actually say.”

I pressed a single key on my laptop.

Instantly, the massive high-definition screens mounted on the boardroom walls flickered to life.

Instead of shipping contracts, the screens displayed high-resolution bank wire transfers, encrypted audio transcripts, and timestamped surveillance photographs. One photo clearly showed Richard Sterling sitting in an unmarked sedan with Thomas Vance in an underground garage two nights prior.

Richard’s face drained of all color. He staggered back a step.

“What... what is this nonsense?” he stammered.

“Those are the records of the five-million-dollar offshore payment made to your shell company in the Cayman Islands,” I said clearly, my voice echoing across the silent room. “Along with the audio recording of you transmitting my personal schedule and home address to the Vance syndicate thirty minutes before I was ambushed.”

The board erupted into gasps of horror and outrage.

“This is fabricated!” Richard shouted, slamming his hand on the table. “This is a witch hunt!”

Two doors at the back of the boardroom swung open.

Marcus Cole stepped inside, accompanied by four armed federal agents from the Department of Justice.

“Richard Sterling,” the lead agent announced, flashing a federal badge. “You are under arrest for corporate espionage, conspiracy to commit extortion, and accessory to aggravated assault.”

As the agents cuffed Richard and dragged him sputtering out of the room, Dante slowly rose from his seat.

He looked around the table at the terrified board members.

“Let this be the only warning I ever give,” Dante said, his voice sending a chill through every spine in the room. “Anyone who seeks to undermine this company—or touches anyone under my protection—will not just lose their career. They will lose everything they hold dear.”
