Chapter 5 - The War Room and the Art of Deception

For the next twenty-four hours, the top floor of Moretti Tower transformed into an impenetrable command center.

Specialized cybersecurity teams swept every line, encrypted every server, and constructed a digital trap so intricate that not even federal analysts could have detected the falsified financial trails.

I worked side-by-side with Dante. Despite my bruised ribs and throbbing temple, the sheer adrenaline of the counter-offensive kept me sharp. For three years, I had organized his life; now, I was helping him orchestrate a tactical masterpiece.

Around midnight, the tech teams cleared out, leaving only the two of us in the vast study surrounded by glowing monitors and spread-out financial ledgers.

I leaned back in the ergonomic chair, letting out a heavy breath.

“The shell accounts are linked,” I said, rubbing my tired eyes. “If Richard transfers the port authorization codes to the Vance off-shore account during the meeting, the transaction will automatically route through the Federal Financial Crimes Enforcement Network. He’ll incriminate himself and the entire Vance leadership simultaneously.”

“Brilliant,” Dante said softly.

He was standing behind my desk, holding two cups of freshly brewed herbal tea. He set one down in front of me and rested a hand on the back of my neck, his fingers working gently against the tight muscles of my shoulders.

A quiet gasp escaped my lips at his touch.

“You’re exhausted,” he murmured.

“I’m fine. I want to see this through.”

“You shouldn't have had to go through any of this. I brought the darkness of my world into your life, Harper.”

I turned my head slightly, looking up into his conflicted eyes. The ruthless titan of Chicago looked almost vulnerable in the soft desk light.

“I chose to stay, Dante,” I said firmly. “Three years ago, when other executives tried to push me out, you gave me authority. You protected my career. You treated me with respect when no one else in this city did. I’m not running away just because the wolves are at the door.”

Dante’s hand drifted from my neck to the side of my face, his fingers curling around my jawline with breathtaking tenderness.

“You have no idea how much power you hold over me, do you?” he whispered.

My breath hitched. “Dante...”

“Every decision I’ve made for the past two years was designed to build a world where you would never be in danger. And the moment they laid a hand on you, I realized that all the power in the world is useless if I cannot keep you safe in my arms.”

He leaned down slowly, giving me every opportunity to pull away.

I didn't move.

When his lips touched mine, the pain in my body vanished. The kiss was gentle at first, a reverent exploration that quickly deepened into a fierce, possessive claim. It was the culmination of three years of unspoken longing, stolen glances across crowded boardrooms, and late nights working in quiet offices.

When he finally pulled back, resting his forehead against mine, our breaths mingled in the quiet room.

“Tomorrow,” Dante said, his voice rough with emotion, “we finish them. And after that, you will never have to hide what you mean to me again.”
