Chapter 11 - Rebuilding the Empire with Clean Hands

Three months later, the landscape of Chicago’s corporate world had irrevocably shifted.
The Moretti Group announced a massive transition toward clean logistics, renewable maritime freight, and fully audited transparent supply chains. Dante dismantled every remnant of the shadow operations his father had left behind, channeling hundreds of millions of dollars into legitimate port modernization, worker pension funds, and community infrastructure.
The press hailed him as a visionary reformer.
Only I knew the truth: Dante was systematically tearing down every dark corner of his world so that our future family would never inherit a single blood debt.
I stepped into the new penthouse office on the 60th floor of Moretti Tower.
The entire floor had been redesigned. Natural light flooded the open-concept space through triple-pane smart glass, and green indoor gardens replaced the cold, sterile marble of the past.
Dante was standing at the conference table, reviewing the architectural plans for the new Harper Children’s Health Pavilion at West End General—the very hospital where he had sat by my bedside that fateful night.
When he saw me enter, a brilliant smile transformed his stern features.
“You’re late for your briefing, Mrs. Moretti,” he said playfully, stepping away from the blueprints.
“The board of directors wanted to review the philanthropic endowment,” I replied, walking into his open arms.
He caught me by the waist, lifting me slightly off the ground before pressing a sweet, lingering kiss to my lips.
“Let them wait,” he murmured against my mouth. “My wife outranks everyone in this building.”
I laughed, resting my hands against his chest, feeling the steady, powerful beat of his heart beneath his tailored suit.
“Have you seen the evening headlines?” I asked.
“I don't read the papers anymore. I only care about what’s happening in front of me.”
May you like
“They’re calling you the King of Lake Michigan.”
Dante chuckled softly, shaking his head. “They can call me whatever they want. The only title that matters to me is being yours.”
