Chapter 9 - The Safehouse on the Lake

By dawn, we were sixty miles north, hiding inside an isolated lakefront cottage nestled within the dense woods of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin.
The safehouse was minimalist, equipped with high-grade satellite communication systems, reinforced steel doors, and a fully stocked private trauma station.
I immediately forced Liam onto the examination table. His external fixator had survived the combat maneuvers, but his abdominal incision had partially separated, oozing dark blood across his ribs.
"Sit still," I ordered through tears of exhaustion, swabbing the torn skin with betadine. "You're reckless, you're stubborn, and you have zero regard for your own post-operative protocols."
Liam sat quietly on the edge of the table, watching me work. His gaze never left my face, tracking every twitch of my hands, every tear running down my cheek.
"Why are you crying, Clara?" he asked softly.
"Because you almost died!" I snapped, my voice breaking as I threaded a curved suture needle. "Because my hands are covered in blood, my brother is six hundred miles away in a hospital bed, and I am falling in love with a man whose entire life is a battlefield!"
The confession hung in the quiet room like a live wire.
Liam went entirely still.
I froze, realizing what I had just blurted out in my exhausted panic. My cheeks burned with sudden heat, and I lowered my eyes, desperately trying to focus on tying the surgical knot.
Liam’s large, warm hand gently closed over both of mine, stopping the needle.
"Say that again," he whispered, his voice dangerously low.
"Liam, please... I need to finish this suture—"
He didn't let me finish. Liam reached up, cupped my jaw in his strong hand, and pulled me down into a fierce, breathless kiss.
The kiss was hungry, electric, and desperate, born from weeks of suppressed tension, near-death terror, and unspoken longing. His lips were warm against mine, commanding yet astonishingly tender. I dropped the forceps, wrapping my arms around his neck, sinking into his warmth, letting the terror of the previous night dissolve into the overwhelming reality of his presence.

When he finally broke the kiss, resting his forehead against mine, his blue eyes were burning with an intensity that pierced my soul.
"I am not going to die, Clara," Liam vowed against my lips. "I am going to finish Russo, I am going to see your brother cured, and then I am going to spend the rest of my life making sure nothing ever frightens you again."
