Chapter 7 - The Midnight Siege

The storm hit at midnight, bringing sheets of torrential rain that lashed against the stone facade of the mansion. Thunder rattled the reinforced window frames, providing the perfect cover for the approaching violence.

Liam stood by the bed, fully dressed in black combat tactical gear, a customized Colt .45 holstered at his chest and a suppressed submachine gun slung over his shoulder. The external fixator on his leg was wrapped tightly in reinforced carbon-fiber splints, allowing him to walk with a stiff, predatory limp.

"Listen to me carefully," Liam said, grabbing my shoulders and looking directly into my eyes. His expression was dead serious. "There is an underground storm bunker behind the wine cellar. You take the medical kit, the ledger, and Tommy’s check, and you go down there right now."

"I'm not leaving you, Liam!" I argued, my voice shaking with terror as the distant sound of muffled gunshots began echoing from the front gates. "You're barely two weeks post-op! If your abdominal stitches tear under stress, you'll bleed out internally!"

"Clara, this isn't a hospital ward. It’s a war zone," Liam growled, thrusting a compact 9mm Glock into my hands. "Do you know how to use this?"

"Point and pull," I stammered, feeling the cold, terrifying weight of the firearm.

"Keep your finger off the trigger until you're ready to kill," Liam said, his voice dropping to a fierce, protective rasp. "If anyone other than me opens that bunker door, you empty the magazine into their chest. Do you understand me?"

Before I could answer, the mansion’s power was abruptly cut, plunging the entire estate into pitch-black darkness.

BANG! BANG! BANG!

Automatic gunfire erupted on the floor directly below us, followed by the shattering of wood and the screams of dying men.

"Go! Now!" Liam shoved me toward the hidden service passage behind the closet.

I sprinted into the narrow, concrete stairway just as the master bedroom doors were violently blown off their hinges by a breaching charge. The shockwave knocked me down the stairs, skinning my elbows against the rough concrete.

Through the crack in the doorway behind me, I saw Leo step into the smoke-filled master suite, backed by five heavily armed mercenaries wearing tactical balaclavas.

"Give it up, Liam!" Leo shouted over the roar of the storm outside. "Russo has the house surrounded! Give me the ledger, and we'll make your death quick!"

From the darkness of the ruined bedroom, Liam’s voice answered with chilling mockery:

"You should have checked my medication tray, Leo."

Muzzle flashes illuminated the room in violent, strobe-like bursts. Liam emerged from the shadows like a phantom, firing with lethal, terrifying precision. Two mercenaries dropped instantly with center-mass shots. Liam pivoted, ducking beneath a hail of return fire, his submachine gun barking in controlled, deadly three-round bursts.

Leo fired wildly, diving behind an overturned marble dresser. "Kill him! Flank him from the balcony!"

I watched in horror from the stairs as a third mercenary raised a shotgun, aiming directly at Liam’s exposed blind spot while Liam engaged a shooter near the doorway.

Without thinking, without hesitating, I raised the 9mm pistol in my trembling hands, aligned the luminous green sights with the mercenary's back, and pulled the trigger.
