Chapter 6 - The Shattered Mirror

Two weeks into my stay, Liam’s physical recovery was accelerating at a rate that defied standard medical textbooks. His sheer will to live—fueled by an unyielding desire for justice—was a force of nature.

Every morning at dawn, before the household guards began their shift rotations, I locked the reinforced doors and helped Liam through grueling physical rehabilitation.

"Step through the heel, Liam," I commanded softly, wrapping my arms firmly around his broad waist as he stood upright on his left leg, his hands gripping two heavy aluminum crutches. "Put ten percent of your weight on the fixator. Your bone needs mechanical stress to stimulate osteogenesis."

Liam let out a low groan of exertion, his corded biceps bulging through his black t-shirt as he transferred his weight. Sweat beaded along his forehead, dripping down the sharp line of his jaw. The scent of his cedarwood soap and warm skin filled my senses, making my own pulse skip a dangerous beat.

"You are a tyrant, Nurse Vance," he grunted, taking a short, agonizing step forward.

"I am a professional who intends to see her patient walk out of this room under his own power," I shot back, taking a half-step with him, our bodies pressed intimately close. I could feel the hard contours of his chest, the raw power coiled within his frame despite his healing wounds.

Suddenly, Liam’s right knee buckled under a sharp spasm of nerve pain.

"I've got you!" I gasped, locking my arms around his torso and throwing my weight backward to catch him.

We both tumbled onto the plush velvet chaise lounge by the wall, Liam landing heavily across my lap, his face mere inches from mine. For several seconds, neither of us moved. The room was silent except for our synchronized, heavy breathing.

His eyes, dark and turbulent as a winter sea, searched my face with an intensity that made the air vanish from my lungs. His hand rose slowly, his rough, calloused fingers gently brushing a stray lock of hair behind my ear, his thumb grazing the soft curve of my cheekbone.

"You shouldn't be here, Clara," he whispered, his voice thick with a complex mixture of desire and sorrow. "I am a dangerous man surrounded by wolves. If you stay near me, you will get burned."

"Maybe I'm not afraid of fire," I breathed, unable to look away from the sculpted curve of his lips.

Liam’s gaze darkened. "You should be."

Before the tension could snap into something irreversible, the sharp ring of the encrypted satellite phone shattered the moment.

Liam rolled smoothly off the couch, his demeanor instantly turning cold and tactical. He snatched the burner phone from the nightstand and pressed it to his ear.

"Speak," he commanded.

A frantic voice crackled through the speaker: "Boss! It’s Marcus in Cook County. Russo just pulled twenty men out of the Cicero warehouse. Leo shut down the estate's external perimeter cameras ten minutes ago. They’re coming tonight!"
