Chapter 9 - The Life They Chose

Five years passed.

Chicago changed.

Mercer Corporation changed.

Gabriel changed most of all.

He sold the remaining companies connected to the criminal network.

He invested in legitimate development projects.

He established a foundation in his mother’s name.

He funded scholarships.

He supported domestic violence shelters.

He never publicly explained why.

Khloe knew.

That was enough.

She became a successful architect.

Her first major project was a community center on the South Side.

Gabriel wanted to finance it.

Khloe told him she would accept investment only if he treated her like any other developer.

He agreed.

Their negotiations lasted three weeks.

She won.

Gabriel pretended to be annoyed.

They married quietly.

No celebrities.

No press.

No extravagant ceremony.

Just family, a few friends, and Elliot standing beside Gabriel.

Khloe wore a simple ivory dress.

Gabriel cried when he saw her.

She teased him about it afterward.

“You're supposed to be terrifying.”

“I have a reputation.”

“You ruined it.”

“I can buy a new one.”

She laughed.

Their marriage was not perfect.

They argued.

Gabriel had nightmares.

Khloe sometimes woke up startled.

Healing was not a straight line.

There were days when an unexpected sound made her freeze.

There were days when Gabriel became too protective.

And when that happened, Khloe told him.

“I'm not your prisoner.”

He would immediately step back.

“I know.”

“I need you beside me, not in front of me.”

“I know.”

That was how they learned to love each other.

Not by pretending the past had vanished.

By refusing to let the past control the future.

One afternoon, Khloe received an unexpected call.

A woman was asking for her.

Her name was Laura Miller.

David’s former girlfriend.

She had returned to Chicago.

Khloe almost declined.

Then she agreed to meet.

They sat in a small café.

Laura was nervous.

“I wanted to tell you something.”

Khloe waited.

“David was never violent only with you.”

Khloe knew.

But hearing it from another woman still hurt.

“He did it to me too.”

Laura told her everything.

The threats.

The isolation.

The financial control.

The lies.

Then she handed Khloe a box.

“I kept these.”

Inside were old letters and photographs.

One photograph showed David standing beside Thomas Vane.

Khloe froze.

The date was ten years earlier.

Long before she had met David.

This proved that David had been connected to the network much longer than anyone knew.

But there was something else.

A handwritten note from Thomas.

Keep the girl close when she starts working for Mercer.

Khloe stared.

“The girl.”

Laura nodded.

“Do you know who they meant?”

Khloe realized.

They had known she would enter Gabriel’s world.

Her entire relationship with David had possibly been engineered.

She called Gabriel.

He arrived within twenty minutes.

He read the note.

Then he looked at her.

“This changes nothing.”

“How can you say that?”

“Because they wanted you to believe your life was theirs to control.”

He folded the paper.

“They were wrong.”

Khloe stared at him.

“Sometimes I wonder how much of my life was really mine.”

Gabriel took her hand.

“Everything after the moment you chose for yourself is yours.”

She smiled.

Later that evening, Gabriel showed her another letter.

It was from Elliot.

He had discovered the truth about their father.

Their father had once tried to leave the criminal world.

Thomas had prevented it.

The man who raised Gabriel had not been the architect of the empire.

He had been trapped inside it too.

Gabriel sat silently after reading.

“I spent my whole life hating him.”

Khloe rested her head against his shoulder.

“Maybe you can forgive him now.”

Gabriel looked at the rain outside.

“Maybe.”

They had finally reached the point where the past no longer felt like a prison.

Then Khloe gave Gabriel unexpected news.

She was pregnant.

He stared at her.

“You're serious?”

She laughed.

“Yes.”

He sat down.

For a man who had stared down armed enemies without blinking, Gabriel Mercer looked completely overwhelmed.

“A baby?”

“Our baby.”

He stood.

“Are you happy?”

“Very.”

He wrapped his arms around her.

She felt his hands trembling.

“I'm scared,” he whispered.

“So am I.”

“I don't know how to be a father.”

“You'll learn.”

“What if I become like mine?”

Khloe pulled back.

“You won't.”

“How do you know?”

“Because you're afraid of becoming him.”

She placed his hand over her stomach.

“That means you're already different.”

Gabriel closed his eyes.

For the first time, he imagined a future untouched by the underworld.

A house filled with laughter.

A child running through the hallway.

Khloe waiting at the door.

And himself coming home not from a secret meeting.

But from work.

May you like

The dream felt almost impossible.

Which was exactly why he wanted it.
