Chapter 6 - The Ghost Behind the Money

Elliot Mercer had died in a boating accident.
At least, that was what Gabriel had been told.
Seven years earlier, police had recovered a body from Lake Michigan.
The dental records matched.
The identification was accepted.
Gabriel had buried his brother.
But now his name was appearing in transactions dated only six months earlier.
Gabriel could not sleep.
He spent the night reviewing old records.
Khloe stayed in the office with him.
Not because he asked.
Because she wanted to know the truth too.
At dawn, she brought coffee.
“You need to eat.”
“I don't have time.”
“You haven't eaten since yesterday.”
He looked at her.
“You're becoming difficult.”
She smiled.
“You trained me.”
That nearly made him smile.
Then she placed a small envelope on his desk.
“I found this in the emergency archive.”
Gabriel opened it.
Inside was an old photograph of Elliot.
There was writing on the back.
If Gabriel ever sees this, he will know.
Gabriel’s hands tightened.
“Where did you find it?”
“Behind the ledger shelf.”
He stared at the photograph.
For the first time in years, memories came rushing back.
Elliot had always been different from Gabriel.
Gabriel was disciplined.
Elliot was reckless.
Gabriel built systems.
Elliot broke them.
But Elliot was not cruel.
He had once told Gabriel:
“If we ever become the people we're fighting, then we've already lost.”
Gabriel had remembered that sentence for years.
He had simply forgotten how much it hurt.
They traced the financial transactions to an investment company operating from Wisconsin.
Its director was listed as Nathan Cross.
Gabriel knew the name.
Everyone in the Chicago underworld knew it.
Cross had disappeared after a warehouse explosion eight years earlier.
Another dead man.
Another impossible identity.
Gabriel flew to Wisconsin with Jackson and Khloe.
Khloe insisted on coming.
“This involves me now.”
Gabriel looked at her.
“It shouldn't.”
“But it does.”
He finally nodded.
They arrived at an abandoned warehouse.
The door was unlocked.
Inside, they found boxes.
Photographs.
Documents.
And a wall covered with photographs of Gabriel.
Some were taken years ago.
Some were recent.
Khloe stepped closer.
Her stomach turned.
There were photographs of her too.
At Mercer Corporation.
At the train station.
Outside her apartment.
Inside restaurants.
Everywhere.
“They've been watching you,” Gabriel said.
She whispered, “For how long?”
Jackson examined the wall.
“Longer than we thought.”
A voice came from the darkness.
“Gabriel.”
Everyone turned.
A man stepped into the light.
Gabriel stopped breathing.
Elliot.
Older.
Scarred.
Alive.
Khloe looked between them.
Gabriel could not speak.
Elliot gave a tired smile.
“You've gotten older.”
Gabriel stared.
“You died.”
“I know.”
“You let me bury you.”
“I had to.”
Gabriel took a step forward.
“You let me believe I had failed you.”
“I did not have a choice.”
“You always had a choice.”
Elliot looked toward Khloe.
“Is she the one?”
Gabriel's voice was cold.
“What does that mean?”
Elliot answered:
“She is the reason I came back.”
Khloe frowned.
“I don't understand.”
Elliot explained.
Years ago, Elliot had discovered that several criminal factions were using legitimate corporations to launder money.
He tried to expose them.
They came after him.
Instead of fighting them openly, Elliot disappeared.
He built a secret network designed to dismantle them quietly.
But he needed someone on the inside.
He chose Mercer Corporation.
And he had been watching.
Khloe asked:
“Why me?”
“Because you were the only person Gabriel trusted with the parts of his life he never talked about.”
Gabriel looked at his brother.
“What do you know about her?”
“Enough.”
Elliot stepped closer.
“David wasn't random.”
Khloe stiffened.
“Explain.”
“David was recruited to monitor you. Marcus was recruited to monitor Gabriel. They were both working for a third faction.”
“Who?”
Elliot handed Gabriel a file.
Gabriel opened it.
Inside was a photograph of a man named Thomas Vane.
Gabriel had known him for years.
Thomas had been his father’s closest associate.
The man who had helped Gabriel inherit the criminal network after his father’s death.
Gabriel stared.
“He's been dead for six years.”
Elliot shook his head.
“No.”
Gabriel looked up.
“He's alive.”
The entire structure of Gabriel’s empire suddenly shifted.
Thomas Vane had orchestrated the original power transition.
He had manipulated Gabriel’s father.
He had arranged Elliot’s disappearance.
He had created the debts David carried.
He had placed Marcus inside Mercer Corporation.
And now he wanted Gabriel.
But Thomas had made one fatal mistake.
He had underestimated Khloe.
Because hidden inside the files was something Thomas desperately needed.
A witness.
Someone who could prove how the entire network operated.
Khloe.
She had unknowingly seen it all.
Dates.
Invoices.
Names.
Transactions.
She had spent years organizing Gabriel’s calendar.
And in doing so, she had accidentally become the keeper of secrets powerful men would kill to possess.
Gabriel looked at her.
“No one is going to use you again.”
Khloe met his eyes.
“Then help me make sure they don't.”
May you like
He nodded.
Together, they began preparing for the final confrontation.
