Chapter 3 - The Secret Beneath the Secretary’s Desk

The next morning, Khloe arrived at work before sunrise.
She had barely slept.
But she was determined to behave as though nothing had changed.
That was what survival had taught her.
Keep moving.
Do not think.
Do not stop.
If she stopped, everything she had been holding back might break.
She entered Gabriel’s office carrying coffee.
“Your eight-thirty meeting has been moved to nine.”
Gabriel looked up.
“You don't have to be here this early.”
“I know.”
“Then why are you?”
She set the coffee down.
“I don't want to be alone.”
Gabriel understood.
He did not comment.
Instead, he pushed a folder toward her.
“Your apartment has been secured.”
She stiffened.
“I can't afford—”
“You're not paying.”
“I don't want charity.”
“It isn't charity.”
She looked at him.
“Then what is it?”
“A temporary relocation.”
“I have nowhere else to go.”
“You do now.”
She hesitated.
Gabriel added, “You will have a private apartment in a building owned by one of my companies. No cameras inside. Security downstairs. You can leave whenever you want.”
Khloe stared.
“You really planned all this overnight?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Gabriel leaned back.
“Because you work for me.”
She smiled faintly.
“That doesn't explain everything.”
“No.”
It didn't.
Something else was happening.
Neither of them was ready to name it.
For the first time, Gabriel began to see Khloe not as an efficient employee, but as a woman with dreams she had postponed for too long.
He learned that she once wanted to study architecture.
She had abandoned the idea after her mother became sick and died.
He learned she liked old bookstores, rainy mornings, and lemon cake.
He learned she hated being called fragile.
And he learned something that surprised him.
She did not actually fear Gabriel.
She feared disappointing him.
That distinction mattered.
Meanwhile, David was desperate.
His accounts were frozen.
His employer had suspended him.
His apartment was under review.
His car had been repossessed.
He had no idea that the person who had orchestrated his downfall was not merely some powerful businessman.
He began searching through Khloe’s belongings.
He found nothing.
Then he remembered the laptop.
Before leaving her apartment, he had installed a hidden program.
He activated it from a borrowed computer.
The data began transferring.
What he expected to find was information about Mercer Corporation.
What he discovered was much worse.
Encrypted financial records.
Unknown shipping companies.
Names of people who did not exist on any public registry.
Large transactions between companies that had no obvious business connection.
And one encrypted directory marked M.
David stared at the screen.
He suddenly understood that Gabriel Mercer was not merely a billionaire.
He was connected to organized crime.
The discovery could be worth millions.
David made a call.
A voice answered.
“What do you have?”
“I found something.”
“What?”
“Mercer.”
Silence.
Then:
“Bring me everything.”
David smiled for the first time in days.
He thought he had found his way back into power.
He had no idea he had just placed himself directly in the path of people even Gabriel feared.
Back at Mercer Corporation, Gabriel received a security alert.
A device had attempted to access restricted data from outside the building.
Jackson walked in.
“We have a problem.”
Gabriel read the screen.
“David.”
“That’s my guess.”
“Find the breach.”
“We're trying.”
Khloe entered.
She immediately noticed the tension.
“What happened?”
Gabriel looked at her.
“Did David ever use your laptop?”
Her face changed.
“I gave him access once.”
“When?”
“About six months ago.”
“Why?”
“He said he needed to print something.”
Gabriel stood.
“Khloe.”
She lowered her eyes.
“I’m sorry.”
“Stop apologizing.”
He approached the desk.
“Did he ever ask you questions about my company?”
“No.”
“Did he ever act interested in your work?”
She thought.
“Once.”
“When?”
“He asked why some of our clients used different company names.”
Gabriel and Jackson exchanged a look.
“How much did you tell him?”
“Nothing.”
“Good.”
Khloe sat down.
“What is he doing?”
Gabriel answered honestly.
“He found something he was never supposed to see.”
“Is he going to hurt me?”
Gabriel looked at her.
“No.”
She searched his face.
“You're sure?”
“I'll make sure of it.”
But that afternoon, a manila envelope arrived at Gabriel’s building.
No return address.
Inside was a printed image.
Gabriel stared at it.
It showed Khloe entering the secure archive room late at night.
Another showed Gabriel leaving her apartment.
A third showed Jackson following them.
On the back of the photographs was a message.
I know what you are.
Gabriel’s expression hardened.
A second note followed.
Twenty million dollars.
Or the world learns who Gabriel Mercer really is.
Jackson read it.
“Blackmail.”
Gabriel folded the note.
“No.”
“Then what?”
“An invitation.”
“To what?”
Gabriel looked out the window.
“To war.”
That evening, Khloe found Gabriel standing alone on the rooftop terrace.
“You shouldn't be up here,” she said.
“Neither should you.”
She moved beside him.
The city stretched below them.
“Mr. Mercer?”
“Gabriel.”
She smiled.
“Gabriel.”
He looked at her.
She took a breath.
“Thank you.”
“For what?”
“For letting me stay.”
Gabriel’s eyes softened.
“I should thank you.”
She laughed softly.
“For what?”
“You make this building feel less like a fortress.”
She turned toward him.
Their eyes met.
For one dangerous second, neither looked away.
Then Gabriel’s phone rang.
Jackson.
Gabriel answered.
“Speak.”
“Boss, we found the source.”
Gabriel listened.
His face changed.
“Repeat that.”
Jackson said the name.
Gabriel closed his eyes.
The blackmail was not coming from David.
David was only the messenger.
The man behind it was someone Gabriel had trusted for fifteen years.
His own chief financial officer.
Marcus Vale.
May you like
And Marcus had one advantage Gabriel could not ignore.
He had access to every secret in the empire.
