Chapter 8 - The Empire Falls

Thomas reached the rooftop of the theater.
Gabriel followed.
Rain soaked both men.
“You've always been your father’s son,” Thomas said.
Gabriel stopped.
“No.”
Thomas laughed.
“You inherited everything.”
“I inherited his mistakes.”
Thomas raised his weapon.
“And your brother?”
Gabriel stared.
“You took him from me.”
“I saved him.”
“You destroyed my family.”
Thomas's expression hardened.
“Families destroy themselves.”
A struggle followed.
Gabriel disarmed him.
Thomas tried to reach the edge.
Gabriel grabbed his arm.
For a moment, Thomas hung over the rooftop.
“You're going to let me die?”
Gabriel looked down.
He could have released him.
Instead, he pulled Thomas back.
Police rushed onto the rooftop and arrested him.
Thomas shouted as officers dragged him away.
“You're nothing without me!”
Gabriel watched him disappear.
Then he turned.
Elliot stood nearby.
“You could have killed him.”
“I wanted to.”
“But you didn't.”
Gabriel looked at the city.
“I'm tired.”
Elliot smiled.
“I know.”
For the first time, Gabriel understood that power had cost him more than money ever could.
He had spent years becoming untouchable.
Now he wanted something different.
A life.
A future.
A home.
Mercer Corporation survived, but its criminal structure did not.
Gabriel began cooperating with investigators.
He turned over information.
He shut down illegal operations.
He sold businesses that could not be separated from the criminal network.
The process was painful.
His empire shrank.
His reputation suffered.
Some people called him a traitor.
Others called him a criminal finally facing consequences.
Gabriel did not care.
He was choosing something else.
Khloe stayed beside him.
But she refused to become dependent on him.
She enrolled in architecture school.
Gabriel offered to pay.
She refused.
He offered a scholarship.
She negotiated a student loan instead.
Eventually, he smiled.
“You are impossible.”
“You keep saying that.”
“Because it keeps being true.”
She graduated two years later.
On the day she received her degree, Gabriel waited outside the ceremony holding flowers.
Khloe smiled when she saw him.
“You came.”
“I wouldn't miss it.”
She looked at the flowers.
“You bought these?”
“Yes.”
“They're beautiful.”
“I was told flowers are appropriate.”
“Who told you?”
“Jackson.”
She laughed.
Gabriel looked at her.
“I have something else.”
“What?”
He handed her a key.
She stared.
“To what?”
“A house.”
Her eyes widened.
“I don't want you buying me a house.”
“It isn't for you.”
She frowned.
“Then who?”
“For us.”
Silence.
Gabriel took a breath.
“I don't know what the future looks like.”
“Neither do I.”
“But I know I want you in it.”
Khloe looked at him.
“Gabriel…”
“I love you.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
Not fear.
Not pain.
Joy.
She stepped forward and wrapped her arms around him.
He held her carefully.
There was no rush.
No demand.
Only choice.
And for Khloe, that was everything.
But before they could build their future, one final shadow appeared.
A letter arrived at Mercer Corporation.
No sender.
Only four words.
You don't know your father.
Gabriel stared at it.
Khloe stood beside him.
“Who sent it?”
“I don't know.”
“Are you afraid?”
Gabriel looked at her.
“No.”
She raised an eyebrow.
He smiled.
“Not anymore.”
The letter was never solved.
May you like
At least, not immediately.
But this time, they would face whatever came next together.
