Chapter 7 - The Woman Who Stopped Running

The plan required patience.
Thomas Vane expected Gabriel to attack.
So Gabriel did the opposite.
He made himself look weaker.
Mercer Corporation publicly announced a major restructuring.
Three subsidiaries were sold.
Two board members resigned.
Investors panicked.
News outlets speculated about internal instability.
Thomas took the bait.
He began moving assets.
That was exactly what Gabriel wanted.
Meanwhile, Khloe became part of the investigation.
For the first time in her life, she stopped hiding.
She told Gabriel everything.
Every time David had isolated her.
Every time he had checked her phone.
Every insult she had swallowed.
Every excuse she had made for him.
Gabriel listened.
He never interrupted.
At the end, she asked:
“Do you think I was stupid?”
“No.”
“Why not?”
“Because fear changes how people make decisions.”
She looked at him.
“What about you?”
“What about me?”
“Are you afraid?”
Gabriel smiled without humor.
“Every day.”
That surprised her.
He continued.
“Fear isn't weakness. Letting fear decide every action is.”
Khloe slowly nodded.
They spent more time together during the operation.
And something changed.
She started laughing again.
Real laughter.
She brought him lunch.
He complained about the food.
She told him to survive.
He told her she was impossible.
The relationship between them became something neither had expected.
Not employer and secretary.
Not rescuer and victim.
Partners.
One evening, Gabriel found Khloe on the rooftop.
“You're thinking too loudly.”
She smiled.
“I didn't know that was possible.”
“With you, it is.”
She looked out over the city.
“I used to think my life was over.”
Gabriel stood beside her.
“And now?”
“I think maybe it was just waiting to begin again.”
He looked at her.
“I want you to know something.”
“What?”
“You don't owe me anything.”
“I know.”
“You don't have to stay at Mercer.”
“I know.”
“You don't have to work for me.”
“I know.”
Gabriel paused.
“Good.”
Khloe turned toward him.
“And what do you want?”
He hesitated.
“The truth?”
“Yes.”
“I want you to stay.”
Her heart skipped.
“As your secretary?”
“No.”
She stared.
He stepped closer.
“As Khloe.”
She smiled.
“That sounds dangerous.”
“It is.”
She laughed.
Neither kissed the other.
Not yet.
They both understood that whatever happened between them had to be chosen freely.
Then Thomas made his move.
Khloe received a message.
Come alone if you want your mother’s missing letters.
She froze.
Her mother had died almost ten years earlier.
The letters were personal.
The thought of seeing them again broke through her defenses.
She told Gabriel nothing.
And that was her mistake.
She went to the meeting.
The location was an abandoned theater.
Thomas was waiting.
“You look just like her.”
Khloe's heart sank.
“You knew my mother?”
“She knew your father.”
Khloe stared.
“My father died when I was a child.”
Thomas smiled.
“No. He disappeared.”
She felt the floor shift beneath her.
Thomas revealed that Khloe’s parents had once worked in financial auditing for a company connected to Gabriel’s father.
They had discovered illegal transactions.
They tried to expose them.
Her father vanished.
Her mother was threatened into silence.
Khloe had spent years believing the official story.
But now she was learning that the family history she knew had been carefully manufactured.
Then Thomas said the sentence that changed everything.
“Your mother kept evidence.”
“Where?”
Thomas smiled.
“With you.”
He pointed toward her.
“Your entire childhood was a hiding place.”
Khloe remembered an old wooden music box.
Her mother had told her never to throw it away.
She had kept it for years.
Thomas wanted it.
Khloe realized why.
The music box contained a hidden compartment.
And inside that compartment was a memory card.
She had unknowingly carried evidence for years.
Thomas demanded it.
Khloe refused.
He raised his weapon.
Then Gabriel stepped out of the darkness.
“You really should stop threatening people who belong to me.”
Thomas smiled.
“She belongs to herself.”
Gabriel froze.
Thomas laughed.
“Looks like you're learning.”
Then the lights came on.
Police.
Federal investigators.
Elliot.
Jackson.
Everyone had been waiting.
Khloe had walked into the theater carrying a hidden transmitter.
Thomas realized too late that his confession had been recorded.
The network collapsed.
But Thomas escaped through a back exit.
May you like
Gabriel chased him into the rain.
The final confrontation had begun.
