Chapter 6 - The Ghost in the Ellison Archives

Deep beneath the bedrock of Manhattan, thirty stories below the penthouse, rested the Ellison Private Archives.
This was not a standard corporate server room. It was a subterranean, climate-controlled bunker lined with reinforced titanium walls, shielded against electromagnetic pulses, and accessible only through a triple-stage biometric vault door that required Marcus’s retina, voiceprint, and DNA match.
Marcus and Julian stood inside the cold, humming chamber surrounded by rows of glowing blue server towers and glass cases containing physical ledgers dating back to the late 19th century.
On the central holographic display table, hundreds of encrypted files from twenty years ago floated in suspended light.
“It took our forensic team four hours to decrypt Evelyn’s personal partition,” Julian said, tapping the interface. “She used a dual-key cipher. One key was based on your childhood birthdate. The second key... was based on the atomic weight of the synthetic alloy Arthur Sterling invented.”
Marcus felt a sharp pang in his chest. “My mother and Arthur Sterling knew they were being hunted.”
“Look at this memo, Marcus,” Julian pointed to a glowing document. “Dated three weeks before Arthur Sterling’s laboratory was incinerated.”
Marcus leaned over the glass display and read the digitized handwriting of his mother:
“To whoever unlocks this when I am gone:
Arthur and I have discovered that Caldwell Heritage Holdings has been laundering illicit offshore arms capital through the Atlantic shipping corridors. They are using our automated navigation patents to create 'ghost routes'—blind spots in international maritime radar.
When Arthur refused to hand over the master override keys, Richard Caldwell threatened his family. If you are reading this, Marcus, it means they have silenced us both. The master proof is hidden inside the physical mainframe of the Sterling Bio-Systems prototype vault at the Riverhouse estate.
Do not trust the Board. Do not trust the Caldwell name. Protect Arthur’s daughter, Rosa. She holds the biometric half of the vault key in her bloodline.
With all my love, Evelyn.”
Marcus closed his eyes for a long moment, breathing slowly. The ghost of his mother’s voice seemed to echo through the cold, subterranean vault.
For ten agonizing years, he had blamed himself for not being able to save her, believing her death was an arbitrary tragedy of fate. Now, the truth stood before him in cold, undeniable light: Evelyn Ellison and Arthur Sterling were martyrs who died protecting the world from a criminal empire masquerading as high-society nobility.
“Marcus,” Julian said quietly. “The Riverhouse estate... that’s where you just sent Rosa and Lily.”
Marcus’s eyes snapped open with sudden, electrifying terror.
“Julian,” Marcus said, his voice dropping to a frantic growl. “Who authorized the transport route for Rosa and Lily this morning?”
Julian checked his encrypted comm-link. “Captain Miller. He’s been on the family security payroll for eight years. He took the armored SUV via the Saw Mill River Parkway.”
Marcus pulled up the internal security log on the central terminal. He bypassed the standard admin protocols and ran a deep-level forensic sweep on Captain Miller’s private bank accounts using Ellison’s proprietary tracking software.
A red warning flashed across the screen:
[ALERT: Wire Transfer Detected — $2,500,000.00 USD — Origin: Caldwell Maritime Cayman Account — Cleared: 05:42 AM]
Marcus’s heart stopped.
Miller wasn't an escort. He was an executioner.
“Miller sold them out,” Marcus roared, grabbing his tactical jacket from the rack and drawing his custom sidearm. “Get the helicopter on the roof NOW!”

“Marcus, the weather is below zero-visibility flight limits!” Julian shouted, running after him toward the elevator.
“I don't care if the sky is falling!” Marcus screamed, his voice echoing off the titanium walls like a thunderclap. “If a single hair on that little girl’s head is harmed, I will burn this entire city to ash!”
