Chapter 10 - The Gala of Reckoning

The Grand Plaza Hotel on 59th Street was the epicenter of global wealth and power.
Outside, hundreds of paparazzi cameras flashed against the velvet ropes. Limousines, Maybachs, and Rolls-Royces lined the street three blocks deep. Inside the Grand Ballroom, towering floral arrangements of white orchids and gold leaf reached toward the vaulted ceilings, where massive crystal chandeliers illuminated eight hundred guests dressed in white-tie formal attire.
At the head of the raised dais stood Richard Caldwell, wearing an impeccably tailored bespoke tuxedo, holding a glass of vintage champagne. Beside him was Diana Caldwell, radiant in an emerald green silk gown, though the haughty smirk on her face barely masked her anxious eyes.
Surrounding them were the members of the Board of Governors of the New York Stock Exchange, several US Senators, and the city’s top corporate tycoons.
Richard tapped his crystal glass with a silver spoon. The sharp chime resonated through the ballroom’s high-fidelity sound system, bringing the room to an obedient hush.
“Ladies and gentlemen, esteemed colleagues, and friends,” Richard began, his voice commanding and theatrical. “We gather tonight under somber circumstances. As many of you know, our dear friend Marcus Ellison has experienced a profound personal and psychological breakdown over the past week.”
Diana dabbed at the corner of her eye with a lace handkerchief, playing the role of the heartbroken victim to perfection.
“It pains my family deeply,” Richard continued, his tone dripping with fake sorrow. “Marcus was like a son to me. But the markets cannot run on sentimentality. When a leader becomes unstable, erratic, and violent toward those he claims to love, it is the duty of the Board to protect the shareholders and the public trust.”
Richard turned toward the Chairman of the Stock Exchange Board. “Therefore, under Section 4 of the Emergency Corporate Governance Act, Caldwell Global Capital formally moves to freeze Marcus Ellison’s executive shares and appoint an interim conservatorship over Ellison Technologies.”
“Seconded,” announced three corrupted board members in unison.
“All those in favor of the emergency resolution—” the Chairman began.
BANG!
The heavy, twelve-foot gold-leafed double doors at the back of the grand ballroom burst open.
The sound echoed through the cavernous hall like a thunderclap.
Eight hundred heads turned instantly.
Walking through the doorway, flanked by nobody, was Marcus Ellison.
He wore a custom black three-piece tuxedo, his posture radiating lethal authority. His eyes were cold, sharp, and commanding as he walked down the central red carpet with slow, measured, unshakable steps.
The crowd parted before him in absolute silence.
Diana’s face went chalk-white. She dropped her champagne glass, and it shattered across the marble stage.
Richard Caldwell’s jaw tightened, his fingers gripping the podium until his knuckles turned gray. “Marcus. You are trespassing on a private executive session. Security!”
Six massive, armed private security guards moved to intercept Marcus.
Marcus didn't even glance at them. He reached into his tuxedo jacket, pulled out a sleek, titanium digital control pad, and pressed a single button.
“I wouldn't take another step if I were you gentlemen,” Marcus said, his voice projecting across the silent hall with absolute clarity. “Unless you want your badges and faces broadcast directly to the Department of Justice’s racketeering division.”
The guards hesitated, looking at Richard in confusion.

Marcus walked directly up the marble steps of the stage, stopping five feet from Richard Caldwell and Diana.
“You wanted a vote on my fitness to lead, Richard?” Marcus asked, his voice low, resonant, and dripping with icy disdain. “Let’s make sure the voters have all the facts.”
