Chapter 5 - Smear Campaigns and Midnight Threats

Julian placed the tablet on the marble counter and hit play.
The screen lit up with the morning broadcast of Manhattan Financial Live. A slick, sharp-featured news anchor was speaking against a backdrop of a flashing red stock ticker.
“...Breaking news this morning in the high-stakes world of New York high society. Billionaire tech magnate Marcus Ellison has reportedly broken off his engagement to heiress Diana Caldwell in what eyewitnesses describe as an unhinged, paranoid outburst during an intimate family dinner. Sources close to the Caldwell family claim Ellison assaulted Miss Caldwell and destroyed private property following months of erratic behavior and alleged substance abuse...”
The screen shifted to a pre-recorded statement from Richard Caldwell himself, standing outside his corporate headquarters surrounded by a dozen high-powered attorneys. The old man looked sorrowful, the picture of an aggrieved father.
“My family is devastated,” Richard lied smoothly to the cameras. “We only wanted to support Marcus through his grief and psychological decline. But after last night’s violent episode, Caldwell Global Capital has no choice but to terminate all joint maritime distribution agreements with Ellison Technologies. We are also filing emergency injunctions with the SEC to freeze Ellison’s voting shares for the safety of the public markets.”
The anchor returned to the screen: “Following this announcement, Ellison Technologies stock has plummeted fourteen percent in pre-market trading, wiping out nearly eight billion dollars in market cap in less than an hour...”
Julian clicked the screen off. The kitchen was dead silent.
Rosa looked terrified. “They are destroying you... because of us. Because Lily spoke up.”
“No,” Marcus said firmly, standing up with an aura of unshakable authority. “They are doing this because their covert theft failed, and now they have no choice but to attack in the open. Richard is trying to panic my board of directors into removing me as CEO before I can present the evidence of Diana’s wire fraud.”
Marcus turned to Julian. “Where is our chief legal counsel?”
“David Klein is in the conference room downstairs with our PR team,” Julian answered. “He says the SEC has already assigned a special auditor to review our accounts based on Caldwell’s fabricated claims of financial instability.”
“Tell David to hold the line,” Marcus said coldly. “We don't issue a defensive press release. We don't apologize. We don't explain.”
Julian frowned slightly. “What do we do then?”
“We play their game, but we change the board,” Marcus replied, his eyes narrowing. “Richard Caldwell thinks he can strangle our supply lines? He forgets that Ellison Technologies owns the automated navigation software that his entire maritime fleet runs on.”
“You want to pull their licenses?” Julian asked, a dangerous grin forming on his face.
“Not yet,” Marcus said. “First, I want to know who let Diana access our internal relay. And second, I want every single scrap of archival data from my mother’s final project twenty years ago. The project she worked on with Rosa’s father.”
Rosa looked up, startled. “My father’s research? Marcus, those files were sealed by the federal court after the lab fire.”
“Court seals can be broken with the right key,” Marcus said softly, looking directly into Rosa’s eyes. “Your father and my mother weren't just creating business tech, Rosa. They were creating something that threatened the Caldwells’ entire monopoly. That’s why they were both silenced.”
Just then, the security console near the kitchen door beeped with a red alert warning.
Julian instantly drew his sidearm, stepping in front of Rosa and Lily. Marcus moved swiftly to shield them both.
Julian checked the security monitor on the wall. “Marcus... a delivery van just pulled up to the service dock. They didn't go through the front gate. They bypassed the biometric scanner on the loading bay using a master Ellison security pass.”
“Who is it?” Marcus demanded.
Julian zoomed in on the high-definition camera feed. The driver’s seat was empty, but on the rear loading door of the van, someone had spray-painted a single, chilling message in dripping red paint:
"SILENCE THE MAID OR BURY THE CHILD."
Rosa stifled a scream, dropping to her knees and clutching Lily against her chest so hard the little girl let out a soft whimper.
“Mommy? What’s wrong?” Lily asked, confused by the sudden terror in the room.
Marcus’s face turned into a mask of pure, murderous rage. The calm, collected billionaire was gone; in his place stood a man who had reached his absolute limit.
Marcus walked over to Rosa, knelt beside her, and placed a firm, steady hand on her trembling shoulder.
“Look at me, Rosa,” Marcus commanded softly.
May you like
Rosa looked up, her eyes swimming with tears of absolute despair. “Marcus, I have to take Lily and run. They will kill her. The Caldwells always destroy what they can't own—”
“You are not running,” Marcus said, his voice ringing with absolute certainty. “No one touches Lily. No one touches you. I am moving both of you to the Riverhouse safehouse in upstate New York right now under full tactical guard. And while you are safe... I am going to tear Richard Caldwell’s empire down to the bedrock.”
