Chapter 5 - The Shell Company Trap

"Explain the financial mechanics to me again, David," I requested, watching the forensic spreadsheets update on his laptop screen.

David Cole turned the monitor toward me, his eyes gleaming with professional satisfaction.

"Six months ago, Arthur created an offshore entity named Sienna Horizon LLC, registered in Panama," David explained, pointing to the wire transfer diagrams. "He used forged corporate resolutions to initiate what he believed was a forty-five-million-dollar automated wire transfer out of Vance Capital's primary liquidity reserve into a holding account in Zurich."

"And where did the money actually go?"

"Because of the automated fraud flags we installed on the corporate accounts in May, the wire transfer was intercepted by the Federal Reserve's Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN)," David laughed. "The forty-five million dollars never left Boston. It was routed into a secured, interest-bearing federal escrow account monitored by the Department of Justice."

"So Arthur spent the last six months stealing... nothing?"

"Worse than nothing," Sarah Jenkins added, taking a sip of coffee. "He created an unbroken, digital paper trail of interstate wire fraud, bank forgery, and tax evasion. He literally handed the federal prosecutors a five-hundred-page roadmap to put him in prison for twenty years, while earning your trust fund three hundred thousand dollars in escrow interest along the way."

I looked out the kitchen window at the morning sun rising over the Boston Common, feeling an immense, profound sense of peace.

Arthur had tried to bury me in bankruptcy.

Instead, he had dug his own grave with federal precision.
