Chapter 8 - Dancing on the Edge of a Razor Blade

The Grand Ballroom of the Drake Hotel was a spectacle of dazzling opulence and concealed menace.

Crystal chandeliers dripped from gilded ceilings, casting golden light over hundreds of guests dressed in haute couture gowns and bespoke tuxedos. Diamonds flashed, vintage champagne flowed like water, and a 20-piece orchestra played classical waltzes.

Yet beneath the velvet and diamonds lay an ocean of predators. Every crime syndicate from the East Coast to the Pacific Northwest was represented in this room.

When the massive double doors swung open, the master of ceremonies announced in a booming voice:

"Announcing the Don of the Moretti Syndicate, Dante Moretti, and his betrothed, Lady Elina Valdez."

A collective, audible gasp swept through the hundreds of guests.

I walked into the ballroom on Dante’s arm, holding my head high. I wore a backless, midnight-blue silk gown that hugged every curve of my body, custom-made in Milan. Draped around my neck was the Moretti legacy necklace—a breathtaking cascade of flawless blue diamonds worth more than the hotel itself.

Every gaze in the room locked onto me. People dropped their champagne glasses. Whispers rippled through the crowd like wildfire.

“Isabella?”

“Is it a ghost?”

“I thought she was murdered!”

Dante walked with regal, terrifying authority, his hand resting possessively over mine on his arm. His dark eyes swept the room with absolute dominance, daring anyone to utter a single word of disrespect.

Standing near the center of the ballroom stood Gianna Moretti, dressed in an emerald green gown, clinging to the arm of Vincent Valenti.

Vincent was tall, slick, with oily charm and cold, calculating eyes. When he saw me, his glass slipped from his hand, shattering on the parquet floor.

"Dante," Vincent stammered, stepping forward and forcing a grotesque smile onto his pale face. "We... we were under the impression you were in mourning. Who is this extraordinary lady?"

"This is Elina," Dante introduced, his voice cutting through the hushed room like a guillotine. "My future wife. And the biological mother of my heir."

Gianna’s face twisted in pure, unmasked rage. "Future wife? Dante, have you lost your mind entirely? You insult Isabella’s memory by parading this lookalike whore around high society!"

Before Gianna could take another breath, Dante took half a step forward. The sheer aura of death radiating from him made three surrounding bodyguards instantly back away.

"Speak to my fiancée with that tone again, Gianna," Dante whispered, "and I will strip you of the Moretti name and leave you with nothing."

Vincent quickly pulled Gianna back, smoothing over the tension with a fake laugh. "Forgive her, Dante. She is merely emotional. Please, allow us to toast to your new union."

A waiter appeared carrying a silver tray with four flutes of vintage Dom Pérignon.

Vincent picked up two glasses, handing one to Dante and offering the other directly to me with a bow.

"To the future of the Moretti dynasty," Vincent smiled, his eyes gleaming with dark intent. "May your reign be long and peaceful."

I looked down at the bubbling golden liquid in the crystal flute.

“Do not drink the champagne during the midnight toast.”

The words of the anonymous letter echoed in my mind like a siren.
