Chapter 4 - The Scent of Danger and Stolen Secrets

Three weeks passed in a surreal blur of routine and luxury.
Matteo flourished under my care. The hollow look in his hazel eyes vanished, replaced by joyful giggles, healthy weight gain, and an insatiable curiosity. He crawled everywhere, pulling himself up onto furniture and babbling endless strings of nonsense syllables that always ended with him clinging happily to my legs.
Every morning at precisely seven o’clock, Dante would join us in the sunlit breakfast room. Despite his intimidating presence, watching him carefully spoon oatmeal into his son's mouth with hands that had taken countless lives was a contradiction that fascinated me more than I cared to admit.
There was an undeniable, crackling tension between us that grew with every passing day. Dante never crossed a line—he was always impeccably polite, professional, and fiercely protective—but whenever our hands brushed while passing Matteo between us, electric sparks seemed to jump across our skin.
One rainy Thursday evening, after putting Matteo down for his evening nap in the adjoining nursery, I found myself wandering through the vast private library on the third floor of the estate.
The library was a labyrinth of towering mahogany bookshelves, rolling ladders, and leather-bound volumes dating back centuries. At the very back of the room stood a heavy antique desk that had belonged to Dante’s late father.
Driven by a curiosity I knew was dangerous, I stepped behind the desk. A small brass key protruded from the lower right drawer.
I knelt down and pulled the drawer open.
Inside lay a collection of ledgers, several passports under various aliases, and a small, velvet-bound journal embossed with the golden initials: I.M.
Isabella Moretti.
My hands shook as I picked up the journal. Opening the first page, I was greeted by neat, flowing handwriting that was almost identical to my own script.
I flipped toward the final entries, dated just two weeks before Isabella's murder.
“March 14th: The syndicate is fracturing from within. Dante believes the threat comes solely from the Volkov cartel in Moscow, but he is blind to the viper sleeping in our own courtyard. The money laundering route through the port of Chicago was leaked by someone with executive clearance in the family. I found the offshore routing numbers. If Dante finds out, he will burn the city down. I have hidden the master ledger in—”
The sentence was cut off, the ink smeared as if the writer had been interrupted in a hurry.
"Curiosity killed more than just cats in this house, Elina."
A voice like thunder sliced through the shadows.
I gasped, dropping the journal onto the desk as I whipped around.
Dante stood framed in the library doorway, dressed in a loose black linen shirt unbuttoned at the collar, revealing the dark ink sprawling across his chest. His hair was damp from a recent shower, and his dark eyes burned with dangerous fire.
"I... I'm sorry," I stammered, backing up until my lower back hit the edge of the desk. "The drawer was unlocked. I saw her initials. I only wanted to know who she was, Dante. I wanted to know my sister."
Dante crossed the room with silent, predatory strides, stopping mere inches from where I stood. The heat radiating from his body was intoxicating, smelling of dark cedar, vetiver, and rain.
He placed both hands on the desk on either side of my hips, effectively trapping me against the wood.
"You shouldn't go digging through the past," he whispered, his voice dangerously low. "The past in this house is paved with graves."
"Isabella wasn't just killed by rivals, was she?" I asked, refusing to look away from his intense gaze. "She wrote about a traitor inside the Moretti family. Someone close to you, Dante."
Dante’s eyes flared with a lethal storm. He reached out, his thumb gently brushing across my cheekbone, tracing the line of my jaw down to the pulse fluttering wildly in the hollow of my throat.
"I have spent nine months hunting that ghost," Dante murmured, his thumb lingering on my lower lip. "And every time I look at you, Elina... I am reminded of everything I failed to protect."
My breath hitched. "Do you see her when you look at me, Dante? Is that all I am to you? A mirror?"
Dante leaned closer, until his lips hovered a fraction of an inch above mine. His warm breath ghosted over my skin, sending a wave of electric heat straight to my core.
"At first, yes," Dante confessed, his voice thick with raw, unfiltered desire. "I thought you were just a shadow of what I lost. But I was wrong. Isabella was gentle, fragile, soft. You... you have fire in your veins, Elina. You look danger in the eye and refuse to bow. You are entirely your own woman."
My heart pounded so hard I was certain he could feel it. For a split second, I thought he was going to kiss me. I wanted him to.
Suddenly, a loud crash echoed from the front gates, followed by the blaring wail of the estate’s automated security sirens.
Red emergency lights flashed to life overhead.

Dante instantly pulled back, his romantic vulnerability vanishing in a microsecond, replaced by the lethal instincts of an apex predator. He reached beneath his linen shirt and drew a matte-black Glock from a concealed holster.
"Stay behind me," Dante ordered, his voice icy and commanding. "We’re under attack."
