Chapter 2 - The Contract Written in Shadow and Silver

The air in the private back office of Ristorante Orelio smelled of stale cigar smoke, aged paperwork, and sheer terror. Salvatore had willingly handed over the keys to Dante’s men before fleeing into the night, leaving me alone with the mafia don and his sleeping son.
I sat on a worn leather armchair, clutching baby Matteo against my chest. Even in deep slumber, the boy’s tiny fingers remained firmly hooked into the collar of my shirt.
Dante stood near the window, his broad back turned to me as he stared out into the snowy alleyway. One of his lieutenants, a scarred man named Marco, stood by the heavy oak door with his arms crossed, a thick manila folder tucked beneath his arm.
"You're shaking, Elina," Dante observed without turning around. His deep voice cut through the quiet room like a velvet blade.
"I’m holding the son of a man who could have me erased before sunrise," I replied, forcing my voice to remain steady. "And you just told me I look like your dead wife. Forgive me if I don't feel entirely relaxed."
Dante turned slowly, stepping toward me with deliberate, measured grace. He reached into his coat, pulled out a gold cigarette case, clicked it open, and hesitated. Glancing down at Matteo’s sleeping form, he snapped the case shut and returned it to his pocket.
"Marco," Dante said calmly. "The file."
Marco stepped forward, laying the thick manila folder on the desk beside me before stepping back into the shadows.
"Open it," Dante commanded.
With trembling fingers, keeping my left arm securely wrapped around Matteo, I flipped open the folder. The first thing that caught my eye was a faded birth certificate from a hospital in rural Pennsylvania, dated twenty-four years ago.
Valdez, Elina. Female. Twin A.
Beneath it was a second document, heavily redacted with black ink.
Valdez, Isabella. Female. Twin B.
My breath caught in my throat. The words on the paper blurred as tears sprang to my eyes. "Twin? I... I was told I was dropped off alone at St. Jude’s Orphanage in an unmarked basket. They told me I had no family."
"You were lied to," Dante said, his gaze piercing through me. "Twenty-four years ago, the Valdez family was a prominent political dynasty on the East Coast. When the family patriarch was assassinated by an opposing cartel, his pregnant wife fled into hiding. She gave birth in secret, died during delivery, and the corrupt doctor sold both infants to separate underground brokers."
I stared down at the documents, my heart hammering against my ribs. "Isabella was adopted by an elite family in Milan. She was raised in wealth, high society, and luxury," Dante continued, his jaw tightening. "You were dumped into the state system and forgotten."
"If you knew this... if you knew she had a twin, why didn't you find me earlier?" I demanded, looking up into his cold, calculating eyes.
"Because Isabella didn't know," Dante murmured, a rare flash of raw grief flickering across his features. "She died believing she was an only child. I only discovered the truth two months ago while investigating the syndicate responsible for her execution."
The word execution hung heavily in the air, cold and lethal.
"Why was she killed?" I whispered.
"Because she was carrying my heir," Dante replied bluntly. "The Volkov syndicate wanted to extinguish the Moretti bloodline before Matteo took his first breath. Isabella managed to deliver Matteo in an emergency bunker before she succumbed to her wounds. Since that night, Matteo has refused every nanny, every bottle, every touch. He was starving himself, Elina. Doctors told me he wouldn't survive another month without human bonding."
As if hearing his name, Matteo stirred against my chest. He let out a soft sigh, his warm cheek resting against the hollow of my throat.
"Until tonight," Dante added, his eyes locked on his son. "He didn't just accept you. He recognized your scent. He recognized the cadence of your heartbeat. To him, you are the mother he lost."
"I am so sorry for what happened to your wife, Mr. Moretti," I said softly, my voice laced with genuine empathy. "Truly. But I am not Isabella. I am a broke twenty-four-year-old waitress with two jobs and four thousand dollars in student loan debt. I cannot replace a ghost."
Dante walked closer until he was standing directly in front of my chair. He reached into his inner breast pocket, pulled out a thick, embossed document, and tossed it onto the desk atop the manila folder.
"I’m not asking you to be my wife, Elina. I’m hiring you."
I looked down at the document. Across the top, in bold, formal lettering, were the words: EXCLUSIVE GUARDIANSHIP AND CUSTODIAL CARE CONTRACT.
"Ten million dollars," Dante stated without a flicker of hesitation. "One million deposited into an offshore account tonight, the rest upon Matteo’s fifth birthday. You will live at the Moretti estate in Lake Forest. You will have a private suite, personal security around the clock, and unlimited access to my resources. Your only duty is to raise Matteo, keep him healthy, and let him know a mother's love."
The number made the room spin. Ten million dollars. It was more money than my entire lineage had made in five generations combined.
"And if I say no?" I asked cautiously, testing the waters.
Dante’s eyes hardened into black flint. "You won't say no. Not because I would force you, Elina—I do not harm innocent women, let alone my son's flesh and blood. But because you’ve spent your entire life searching for a family, and right now, the only piece of your sister left on this earth is sleeping in your arms."
I looked down at Matteo. His tiny chest rose and fell in perfect synchronicity with mine. I felt a sudden, fierce tug in the center of my soul—a bond woven from blood and tragedy that I couldn't deny even if I wanted to.
"What about the people who killed my sister?" I asked, looking straight into the eyes of the most dangerous man in Chicago. "If they find out I exist... won't they come for me too?"
May you like
Dante leaned down, his scarred face inches from mine, his dark scent of sandalwood and gunpowder wrapping around my senses like a velvet cage.
"They will try," Dante whispered, a lethal promise gleaming in his dark eyes. "And I will slaughter every last one of them before they lay a single finger on you."
