Chapter 13 - The Wrath of the Black Lion

When I woke up, the freezing cold was the first thing that hit me.
I was tied to a heavy steel chair in the center of an abandoned industrial warehouse at the Port of Chicago. Ice coated the rusted corrugated metal walls, and the distant sound of foghorns echoed over Lake Michigan.
Matteo was sitting in an open wooden crate ten feet away, bundled in his coat, whimpering softly with his thumb in his mouth, guarded by two Russian mercenaries with Kalashnikovs.
"Matteo," I whispered through cracked lips. "I'm here, baby. I'm right here."
Hearing my voice, Matteo looked up, his hazel eyes wide with tears, but he stopped crying.
Nikolai Volkov sat on an overturned shipping crate nearby, smoking a thick cigar while looking at a countdown timer on his satellite phone.
"Five minutes until your lover arrives, little bird," Nikolai mocked, blowing a cloud of gray smoke toward the ceiling. "He came alone, just as I ordered. A man blinded by love is a man easily butchered."
"You underestimate him," I said, my voice filled with razor-sharp venom despite the blood trickling down my cheek. "Dante Moretti isn't coming to surrender. He is coming to slaughter you."
Nikolai laughed—a harsh, barking sound. "He is one man against forty of my elite killers. What can one man do?"
At that exact second, every single floodlight inside the massive warehouse exploded simultaneously in a shower of sparks.
Total, pitch-black darkness swallowed the room.
The only illumination came from the faint red laser sights of the confused Russian guards and the red countdown light on Nikolai's phone.
"Generators! Turn on the backup generators!" Nikolai roared, drawing his weapon.
A second later, a horrific scream tore through the darkness from the catwalks sixty feet above our heads.
THUD.
A Russian sniper plummeted from the ceiling, crashing through a wooden pallet and landing lifeless on the concrete floor.
Then came the gunfire.
It wasn't a chaotic firefight. It was a surgical, terrifying execution.
Gunshots echoed in sharp, rhythmic pairs from the shadows: BANG-BANG. BANG-BANG.
With every gunshot, another mercenary dropped to the floor without ever seeing where the bullet came from. Shadows moved along the rusted steel beams like a vengeful demon unleashed from the underworld.
Panic erupted among the remaining guards. "He's in the rafters! He's everywhere! Fire! FIRE!"
Muzzle flashes illuminated the warehouse in frantic bursts of light, bullets tearing through empty air and metal siding.
Out of the darkness behind the two guards watching Matteo, a towering figure materialized like a shadow given solid form.
Dante caught the first guard by the throat, snapping his neck with a sickening crunch, before firing three point-blank rounds into the chest of the second guard before the man could even turn around.
Scooping Matteo up with one arm, Dante leveled his smoking weapon directly into the center of the warehouse.
The backup generators finally groaned to life, flooding the room with harsh yellow halogen light.
Dante stood surrounded by thirty dead mercenaries. His face was covered in soot, sweat, and blood, his black tactical vest riddled with shrapnel marks, but his dark eyes burned with the unstoppable fury of an apex predator.

He set Matteo down behind a thick steel pillar, then turned his gaze toward Nikolai Volkov.
"You touched my family, Nikolai," Dante rasped, his voice vibrating with absolute death. "Now you die."
