Chapter 7 - A Morning of Chaos and the Secret Hollywood Empire Revealed

By 7:00 AM the following morning, the quiet suburban street in Pasadena where my parents lived had turned into a full-scale media circus.

Satellite broadcast trucks from NBC, CBS, CNN, and Bloomberg lined both sides of the curb. Dozens of photojournalists with massive telephoto lenses stood on the sidewalk, their cameras aimed at the front door. Black town cars with tinted windows were parked down the street, containing executives, publicists, and private security teams awaiting my departure.

Inside the house, nobody had slept.

Mom sat at the kitchen island, staring blankly at a cold cup of black coffee. Dad was pacing back and forth in the living room, watching continuous news coverage of the Vanguard-Apex acquisition on the television.

Marcus and Jennifer were huddled in the corner of the family room, whispering furiously to each other like cornered animals. Every time a new news report flashed my name across the screen, Marcus flinched as if physically struck.

At 7:30 AM, there was a firm, rhythmic knock on the front door.

Dad opened it slowly. Standing on the porch were two imposing men in tailored charcoal suits with discrete earpieces, accompanied by Sarah Lin, my Chief of Staff and Head of Corporate Communications.

"Good morning, Mr. Vance," Sarah said professionally, holding a sleek leather folder. "I’m here to escort Ms. Vance to the executive transport. We have the board briefing at nine."

Dad stepped back, completely overwhelmed by the sheer organizational authority radiating from Sarah and the security detail. "She’s... she’s upstairs getting ready."

I walked down the stairs a moment later. I wasn't wearing the Target sweater anymore. I wore a bespoke navy tailored suit, Italian leather heels, and a minimalist platinum watch. My hair was pulled back into a sleek, professional low bun.

When Marcus saw me, he stood up slowly. The sight of me in full executive armor seemed to physically diminish him. He looked exhausted, rumpled, and broken.

"Alexandra," Marcus said, his voice hoarse and tentative. "Can we... can we talk for a minute?"

I stopped at the bottom of the staircase, looking at him with calm, level eyes. "I have a nine o'clock board meeting, Marcus."

"Please," Marcus pleaded, swallowing hard. "Just five minutes. Please."

I looked at Sarah, who nodded and stepped outside with the security team to give us privacy.

Dad and Mom gathered in the hallway, looking at Marcus and me with tense, anxious expressions.

"What is it, Marcus?" I asked quietly.

"I need to know," Marcus stammered, looking down at the polished floorboards before forcing himself to look into my eyes. "Is Vanguard really that big? Are you really... the sole owner?"

I looked at my family—at Dad’s bewildered pride, Mom’s tearful regret, Jennifer’s envious panic, and Marcus’s shattered ego.

"If you really want to know what my life looks like," I said calmly, "get in the car. All of you. I’ll show you."
