Chapter 10 - Marcus's Hidden Crisis and the Threat of Complete Ruin

Before Dad could respond, the double doors of my office opened, and Sarah Lin stepped inside, looking grave.
"Ms. Vance, forgive the interruption," Sarah said, holding a confidential red file folder. "The legal and compliance update you requested regarding the Glendale and Pasadena holdings under Marcus Vance's LLC just came through from our forensic accounting team."
Marcus went as white as a ghost. "Alexandra... please, don't."
"Leave us for a moment, Sarah," I instructed.
Sarah handed me the folder, bowed slightly, and stepped out, closing the door.
I opened the folder on my desk and began reading the highlighted figures aloud.
"Marcus Vance LLC. Primary asset: Glendale Medical Plaza. Outstanding primary mortgage: four point two million dollars. Secondary high-interest mezzanine loan: one point eight million dollars. Current vacancy rate: sixty-five percent. Foreclosure notice issued by Pacific Western Bank four days ago."
Dad gasped, turning his head sharply toward Marcus. "Foreclosure? Four days ago?"
I turned the page. "Personal guarantee on commercial credit lines: eight hundred and fifty thousand dollars. Credit card debt across four accounts: one hundred and forty thousand dollars. Due date for complete debt restructuring: December first. If not paid in full, bankruptcy proceedings begin, and all personal assets—including your home in Pasadena and both leased vehicles—will be seized to satisfy creditors."
The office went dead silent.
Jennifer buried her face in her hands, her shoulders shaking violently with silent sobs. The illusion of their glamorous, successful life was completely and utterly demolished.
Marcus slowly sank into one of the leather armchairs opposite my desk. He buried his face in his hands, his knuckles turning white.
"I’m ruined," Marcus whispered, his voice muffled by his palms. "I’m completely ruined. In six days, the banks are going to take everything. Everyone will know. The club, our friends, the entire city... they’re going to know I’m a fraud."
Mom was weeping openly now. "Marcus... how could you let it get this bad?"
"Because I had to be successful!" Marcus screamed suddenly, pulling his hands away from his face, his eyes red and filled with tears of pure agony. "Dad talked about success every single day of my life! I had to be the best! I had to own properties! I had to drive the best car! When the market crashed last year, I couldn't admit I was losing! I took out loan after loan hoping to flip the Glendale building before anyone found out!"

He turned his tear-stained face toward me, his voice cracking with absolute desperation.
"Alexandra... please. I’m begging you. I know I was horrible to you. I know I’m arrogant, and selfish, and pathetic. But please... don't let them take our home. Don't let me go to prison for debt default. I’ll do anything. I’ll sign whatever you want. Just please... save me."
