Chapter 2 - The Stunned Silence and the Desperate Search for Answers

The grandfather clock in the hallway sounded like a sledgehammer striking an anvil. Tick. Tock. Tick. Tock.
For thirty agonizing seconds, nobody at the table spoke. Marcus stared straight ahead, his eyes wide, glazed, and bloodshot with sudden disbelief. The smug, condescending smile that had defined his face for the last decade had vanished completely, replaced by a pale, slack-jawed mask of utter shock.
Jennifer was the first to blink. Her hand was trembling as she slowly set her wineglass onto the table, the crystal vibrating against the wood. "What... what was that?" she whispered, her voice cracking. "Who did they just say?"
Dad hadn’t turned back from the television. His head remained craned toward the living room, where the news anchor was now interviewing a senior tech analyst from Goldman Sachs about the "historic valuation of Vanguard Creative Group."
"Alexandra Vance..." Dad mumbled, his voice thick with confusion. "They said Alexandra Vance. That's... that's not..."
"It’s a coincidence," Marcus blurted out, his voice unnaturally high and desperate. He snatched his fork off the floor, his face flushed bright crimson. "It’s a common name. There are thousands of Alexandra Vances in California. Tens of thousands. It's obviously some Harvard MBA graduate who works in Silicon Valley."
"Marcus," Mom said, her voice barely a breath. Her eyes were fixed squarely on me, wide with a terrifying mix of realization and awe. "Look at the screen."
On the 65-inch television screen in the living room, the news broadcast had transitioned to B-roll footage. It showed the exterior gates of Vanguard Studios in Burbank—a sixty-acre modern production campus with sleek glass buildings, high-end soundstages, and manicured palm trees. Superimposed on the lower third of the screen was my full legal name, my official corporate title, and my college graduation credentials from UCLA.
And right next to it was my face.
Jennifer frantically snatched her iPhone off the table. Her manicured fingers flew across the screen, typing at lightning speed. Within five seconds, her breath hitched audibly.
"Oh my God," Jennifer whispered, her face losing every single drop of color.
"What?" Marcus demanded, his voice trembling with irritation. "What is it?"
Jennifer turned her phone around and shoved it in front of Marcus’s face.
The homepage of The Wall Street Journal, Variety, Forbes, and The Hollywood Reporter all featured the exact same banner headline:
"THE QUIET QUEEN OF STREAMING: 32-YEAR-OLD ALEXANDRA VANCE SELLS VANGUARD FOR $3.8 BILLION."
Below the headline on Forbes was an updated real-time net worth tracker: Alexandra Vance — Net Worth: $3.19 Billion.
Marcus stared at the glowing phone screen. His throat bobbed violently as he swallowed dry air. He looked at the phone, then slowly lifted his gaze to look at me, sitting five feet away in my twenty-dollar Target cotton sweater.
"This is... this is impossible," Marcus stammered, his voice losing all its previous authority. "You drive a 2017 Honda Civic. You live in a one-bedroom apartment on Tujunga Avenue. You shop at discount grocery stores! How... why would anyone with money live like that?"
I took a slow, deliberate sip of my ice water, set the glass down gently, and looked directly into my brother's stunned eyes.
"Because, Marcus," I said in a calm, steady voice that echoed off the high ceiling, "unlike you, I don’t need the world to validate my existence with rented luxury cars and second mortgages. Real wealth doesn't shout. It doesn't need to brag at holiday dinners. It just builds."
Dad’s chair scraped loudly against the hardwood as he stood up. His eyes were wide, his mouth slightly open. "Alexandra... is this true? All these years... you weren't struggling?"
"I haven't struggled financially since 2019, Dad," I replied evenly.

Mom put both hands over her mouth, tears suddenly springing to her eyes. "Three point eight billion dollars? My baby girl... you're a billionaire?"
Before anyone could say another word, my phone—which had been sitting face down on the table on silent—began to vibrate continuously. The vibration was so intense and relentless that the wooden table began to hum.
